Which is better for a site - submission SEARCH ENGINE OR A DIRECTORY.

Any suggestions are highly appreciated.

Initially one should submit the site to directories. Automatically after the generation of backlinks, site will be indexed by the search engines.

when you submit your site to directory it is indexed by search engines but it is also fine if you submit it to search engines also....

Try to submit in many directories in most appropriate category suitable for your site.
Also meanwhile collect as many as backlinks as possible from relevant sites. There is no need for search engine submission, some day SE spider will get crawled through your site and you will be indexed.
