A lot has been made of the Web 2.0 boom, but Jakob Nielsen's numbers reveal that what has been touted as the participatory web, where democracy and free speech abound, is still dominated by a small percentage of contributors.

That small percentage is one percent.

90% do not participate through blogs, wikis, forums, comments, etc -- just consume. 9 percent particpate occasionally. One percent contributes almost all the content.

So far, this whole Wisdom of Crowds idea on the Internet is quite moot until the crowd actually participates.

Nielsen gives some tips for encouraging participation. Other than that, it's more of a wakeup call for the 2.0 dreamers.
