Mike Arrington puts his own rumor at 40% liklihood after talking to some major VCs. He says Google is in talks with YouTube to buy the company for $1.6 billion.
have you heard anything? Do you think it's likely? Do you think it's a good move, if it's true?

I'm not sure it's worth that amount, however, I think that the video content added to google's video offering would be a very interesting addition to google's video mix.
I am a bit jealous that I didn't come up with something like this that I built a huge user base and could now sell for well over a billion dollars!
Why can't I come up with anything like this? One day, I'll figure something out that will mean something as gigantic as this site is.
Maybe a better MySpace. Or a combo of MySpace and youtube in a much bigger way, say web 2.0 form.

When Google buys YouTube (if they do) it will be like going out with a girl with 3 illegitimite kids and a broken down car…. baggage baggage! YouTube has a ton of outstanding lawsuits for copyright infringement after users free willingly record their favorite television shows and upload them to YouTube for millions to share.
YouTube kind of reminds me of Napster just with videos. I talked with someone at Google and because I wasn’t well known yet, they decline to comment. Sorry guys. I’ll work on being more controversial.

That would make a lot of sense for google - so that they can leverage thier advertising. Placing adsense on a site like this would pay for the investment. It wouldn't surprise me to see more bids for large content rich sites like about.com and infoplease as well.
It makes good sense for any of the search engines to buy content sites to run thier own ads on. And quickly before one of the other SE gets it first. IMHO of course.

Mark Cuban has been against anyone buying YouTube for some time. He made more comments today:

I agree with peschomd Google a has a lot of clean up to do so they don't continued to get sued. As Mark C has been saying the major lawsuits have been just waiting for some company with money to buy YouTube before filing a lawsuit against them.

The Wall Street Journal and the New York Times both are confirming similar reports, and Jim Cramer predicted Google stock to soar up to $500 if the acquisition is complete...he also pegs YouTube at a $3 billion valuation
And congratulations to peschomd, who got quoted in the follow-up article (http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/topnews/wpn-60-20061009GOOGPredictedToRiseOnYouTubeBuy.html) for the three kids and a broken down car remark. :)
so waddya think? YouTube worth $3 billion?

What I wonder about is will Google Video and YouTube still be two separate sites, or will it be one portal?
I wonder because I'd like to be able to continue to use the Youtube ripper (http://www.ripzor.com/youtuberipper.html) and I'm afraid this could change now that Google own Youtube...

Google said YouTube would continue operate independently.
