Research performed at Queensland University of Australia in Brisbane, Australia, dumped a cold shower on the long-held perception that people do more searching for sex than they do for business or e-commerce ideas.

I always find programs that tell you what people are searching for suspect.

I look at wordtracker and half the time it lists poety as one of the top 10 searches. That one factor alone is why I don't use wordtracker. I doubt poetry is beating any porn or business-related topic.

The same goes for studies using search engine data from the sites mentioned in the article. Very few people search DMOZ as their preference. Even if you added up all the search engine data besides google your results would be way less than accurate.

Porn may well have dropped a little in the last 2-3 years due to more women searching, not that none of them search for porn, but certainly less than men do, and the drop could be because more people are trying to learn how to make money on the web.

However that last reason takes some of them into porn as well. Porn searches are still topping the list is my bet.

I haven't seen a reliable way to determine what top performing keywords are. Even if you were to discover them, in the Adult Industry, my experience has been to stay in the top ten listings, in Google; you would have to have a huge advertising budget. I manage an Adult Site that sells Sex Toys, etc. and the idea of constantly operating in the black is fun to entertain, it's not, again in my experience, what is the reality. I think one important differentiation would be between adult websites would be those that sell Sex Toys, etc. and those that offer on-line porn. I'm open to discuss these topics, but once again, to stay on top, from what I've seen, you have to have a huge advertising budget.

I think that if not outstripped then at least other than porn searches are definitely growing.

More and more people are using the web and searching for anything. I think of myself and other family and friends our mindset is more often not..

I need THIS lets go to the store and see if they have any

it's..

I need THIS let me take a quick peek online.. google THIS find manufacture check details, modify to local search add THIS mytown find retailers, check prices online, check ebay, find price / convenience factor go buy.

Granted there's still a lot of porn searching going on out there as highschool and college kids are all over the NET BUT... more and more us mom and pops are using the net for practical stuff.

Business Better Than Sex For Searchers

I've been told, honest only told I did not say yes to this, please don't tell my wife ;-), that Prostitutes, (at least in the UK), often ask punters "Are you doing Business,"

This is what Alexa Top 500 Movers and Shakers (http://www.alexa.com/site/ds/movers_shakers?lang=en) say! (do they filter out porn?)

Just look at some of the user data from the AOL disaster and you tell me if "sex" keywords are still not the king of all keywords:
