OK guys, I am new to all the SEO stuff so please be a little understanding if I post something obvious!

I have recently developed a site, an Oil and Gas jobs board. OilRecruiter.net, The Oil and Gas Industry Jobs Board (http://www.oilrecruiter.net). The site has been well recieved by the industry. It is only 2.5 months old.

The keywords I was looking at getting a good ranking with were for example, Oil Jobs, Oil Industry Jobs.

Now under MSN search I come back in position 2 or 3, (not bad!!) however under google I am nowhere to be seen in the first 1000+. Now you would have thought that google had not indexed my site yet, well not so as if you use the keywords oil recruiter my site returns pos 1 or 2.

So is this because the phrase "oil jobs" is a top search selection and my site is the google "sandbox" (if this exists or not!) or as I am still waiting to get listed in DMOZ do I stand no chance of being listed in the top 100 until this happens.

Your thoughts please!

Oh and one other thing, I still have a page rank of ZERO under google, how long does it take to get a rank at all!!

Patience Adam. :)

As far as PR is concerned, Google updates the toolbar only every 3-4 months. As soon as your site is indexed, you have PR.

Submit to DMOZ and forget about it. No, it is not a requirement to be included for a top listing. It is, however, very important to have links pointing to your site using the key phrases you wish to rank on as anchor text. The more relevant the source, the better.

Spend time building your IBL's (In-bound links) by submitting your site to directories using your key phrases as anchor text.

Good luck!

As Dave say's but you have no where enough links, you need some Google IBL's - the URL title will work on its own - providing people search Oil Recruiter!!

Put www.oilrecruiter.net into a few blogs/ articles/ forums - submit here www.pheedster.com/directories.php Good luck

Guys, thanks very much for the info, I was unaware that google only updates the PR once every few months. Anyway I guess I'll keep plugging my site on various dirs, forums etc, I have done some already, but it's really hard to track my progress.

Perhaps you can answer one more question.

When you enter a domain in google search, it comes back with the options

Show Google's cache of oilrecruiter.net
Find web pages that are similar to oilrecruiter.net
Find web pages that link to oilrecruiter.net
Find web pages from the site oilrecruiter.net
Find web pages that contain the term "oilrecruiter.net"

Now if I click the "Find web pages that link to oilrecruiter.net"it comes back with nothing???, however I know that there are numerious sites that link back to OilRecruiter. Why is this??

I use www.sitereportcard.com to check and it returns

Search Engine Inclusion 73
Link Popularity 147

Now this is a little confusing??

Any ideas?

It will only show you sites that point to you from Google.
So keep submitting, yes it's boring but it is the only way.

Just to add... Google only shows a sample of all the links the actually know about. Sometimes that sample is zero.
