One of the best ways to get links and pump up traffic for certain kinds of Sites and/or Pages, articles, news stories etc is to offer several options to add to targeted Social Sites, such as:
del.icio.us
Digg
Yahoo My Web
Furl
That's just to name a few.
Let's talk about value, marketing this way, how to go about it and others that are noteworthy, but not mentioned above.
I would appreciate any advice and know how along these lines.
Thanks,
Ken

I also use StumbleUpon.com. I often get 30 to 50 hits in the first half day of submiting a site to StumbleUpon.
I just started using Digg and have been using del.icio.us for about two months. I'm still waiting to see the results.
I think with del.icio.us it really depends on the tags that are associated your site. The more popular the tag, the more likely you will have people find your site. To make your site more popular with the tag, you then have to entice people to add your site to their del.icio.us page. This takes us back to having great content that people will want to share with others.

I have these tags on my blog. The best ones I have seen so far in bound clicks from viewers are Digg and Delicious. When I post something in my blog I go and "dig" or syndicate the post myself first and then if it catches on I usually see some good traffic, which can then lead to links from other blogs talking about my blog. Simple huh?
One of the best responses I have seen thus far is that Diet Coke and Mentos video (http://www.jaankanellis.com/diet-coke-and-mentos-viral-video-by-eepybirdcom/) that went around. I posted a brief entry on my blog and then sent it out and it caught one well.

I dont have any social tagging experiance with other websites, just than blogs, but sure why not. Just browse around each of them and you will see real websites, forums and mnay other types of websites doing great. You add social bookmarking anywhere you want!

Yahoo has a site upcoming.org. I got some visitors immediately when I posted on it this past weekend.
I also get a fair amount of visitors from yelp.com and 43places.

If this turns out to be a valuable thread, I'll rename it and make it a sticky.
Different social sites lean better one way or the other from a marketing perspective. ie. MySpace is a great place for young entrepreneurs to promote their wares as well as musicians to make a mark.
In fact I accidently fell into the pie there with a rural water utility Site (www.dpwater.com) because of the graphic used on the home page, yielding hundreds of visitors. It has not resulted in links and in this case won't result in additional business for a geographically confined client, but the visits have been phenominal.
Targeted application as opposed to incidental "pie" could be very effective.
When including notes about the different social networks here, please go a little further and indicate what base interests and age groups might be involved, as well as any notes on application and we may be able to assemble this into a useful spreadsheet.
If we start to go there, we'll "sticky it" and march on.
Thanks for your input so far.

Ken you mentioned and asked about marketing this way.
I would assume in social settings "our job" isn't to sell per say. You know shove it down someones throat.
Ken you talk about links and such do you mind explaining what links are?
Anyone else?

Great post, I have been looking for information on the subject. I know the concept of social networking, my question is what makes visitors to want to bookmark my page in one these websites?

my question is what makes visitors to want to bookmark my page in one these websites?
Bbecause for once a visitor can actually vote or spread the word about your website to others that might be interested in the same subject matter. The side benefit of SEO requires a little more explanation than just getting as many clicks as possible from these networks.
The bottomline is if someone does stumbles upon your website and reads what they were looking for and finds it useful they can now "spread the word" about this great piece of content to the rest of the world through tagging.
Of course this hopefully will lead to more IBL's to that page of yours because other bloggers will find it useful and post to it and about it.

Hi all
I'm the webmaster of eKstreme.com and the author of the Socializer linked to above. I picked up this thread while looking at my referrers list :)
I went on those sites you mentioned and I could only find the code for del.icio.us, I was surprised that finding the code for the others was so hard. Like no where on Digg could I find the code to add to my site.
I can also help you with that. I have a page that lists the code for the top social bookmarking sites: http://ekstreme.com/seo/socialbookmarkingcode.php , but I suggest you use the Socializer for two reasons:
1. You get access to more sites (~40 or so).
2. You save space on your site by having a single link instead of one for each social bookmarking site.
If you still want to implement the code yourself, it should be straightforward, but please post back if you need more help.
All the best,
Pierre

Hello eKstreme
Have you considered a monthly subscription concept that allows us to pop open a smaller window and even brand a space at the top of the window?
I would like a smaller window with out the banner ad and other information. I understand why its there of course because that's how this is free :-)
Just a thought.

I think sites that are in business to make money and have great content will sign-up. I do not know how much they would pay though.
I would pay $9.95 per month at the monent if I could reporting to see if people were using the service.
Let me know if you don't want to try it, I might try it myself :-)

I hope we all understand just how powerful these "Social Networks" and Sites Really are. They extend well beyond "online".
Just tonight there was a considerable newspot in the local news (Houston) about a young mother grieving over the loss (murder) of her teenage daughter.
Evidently, her daughter was well liked and popular on myspace. A band the daughter liked on myspace held a successful benefit concert in her memory today, earning enough to start a college fund in her memory.

Welcome aboard eKstreme,
You had a great idea there with the Social Networking Service. I am testing it on a new Site right now and I had a couple issues:
1. I need to apply CSS styles to the links that are generated in either php or javascript.
2. I need all outside links to open up in a new browser window for Site consistency.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Ken

It had to happen sooner or later:
There are a growing number of websites that offer both social networking Icons and the links (http://3spots.blogspot.com/2006/02/30-social-bookmarks-add-to-footer.html).
However there is a rising contingent of users that are fighting the pollution of websites with all those social networking icons. (http://www.valleywag.com/tech/web-20/valleywag-psa-fight-social-bookmark-icon-pollution-175825.php)
Maybe services like “Socializer (http://ekstreme.com/socializer/)” are very timely in what they have to offer, but just need a little tweaking.
I am going to give it a try on one of my Sites and see where it goes.

Here are a few Links that categorize Social Networking Sites that should help anyone catch the Social Networking Wave:
Wikipedia - List of social networking websites (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_social_networking_websites)
The Social Software Weblog (http://socialsoftware.weblogsinc.com/2005/02/14/home-of-the-social-networking-services-meta-list/)
Before you dive headlong though… again there are other opinions and a growing outcropping of articles against the craze:
“In other words, social networking services are often a system for subsidizing the poor networking skills of the unconnected with the strong networking skills of the well connected. The people who are the most valuable to the system only end up with more spam from random people trying to reach them.. ref: “Social Networking Services In The Enterprise Bringing Out Critics” (http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20031215/132222_F.shtml).

I found StumbleUpon to be very interesting. I have not yet seen the effect of it.
I've placed a couple of YouTube and Google Videos (that relate to the content of my site) in my Sly Bald Guys forum and have added them to StumbleUpon. The response has been amazing!
The response was so good, that I actually decided to advertise on StumbleUpon. StumbleUpon charges $.05 per person they send to your website. I bought $100 worth of advertising and said I only wanted to spend $10 a day; so I get 200 visitors a day sent to my site when they stumble. The best part is that when people like the content they add my link to their profile and then cause others to stumble upon my site for free! So, I may pay for 200 visitors, but I get several IBLs and hundreds of more visitors a day than I actually paid for.

are people still having good results from digg, stumbleupon etc.?
I removed all the sites except del.ico.us that required a button on my toolbar. they slowed everything down too much.
I've had great luck with MySpace. I have over 500 "friends" and almost all of them are people that I have something in common with -- our taste in music, art, sports, etc. I use the bulletin function conservatively and have had good feedback on stuff like my article -- ring-a-ding ding - travel like the rat pack.
I joined mybloglog a couple weeks ago on the recommendation of people from this forum. I've had 40+ people join my community and had some post links on their sites.
also a couple weeks ago I joined tallstreet.com and I've had some good reviews from other users. I haven't noticed any traffic but I'm hopeful.

I'm sure that's true, but I'm trying to connect with people who might be interested in the same things I feature on my site. It does me no good to have traffic just for traffic's sake.
Juliemarg, though we'd all love to grab that targeted traffic brass ring, the fact is that if you have enough traffic a certain amount of them are sure to want what you have. I'm pretty familiar with your site and your writing. You have an intriguing slant on things that might make even those who might not be looking for what you offer NOW curious enough to poke around on first glance, and might like what they see enough to bookmark for the future.
So, yes, keep looking for ways to hone getting targeted traffic, but in the meantime, take Janeth's advice. She's a pretty smart cookie.

I wanted to update on my experience with social marketing.
I've continued with targeting people with like interests on myspace with great results. I have over 800 friends (isn't that a funny way to describe them ;^D) and have received messages with suggestions on things to add to my website etc. Nice comments, bulletins and private messages. I immediately delete someone if they send wierdo stuff or sparkly messages & spam. My niece (the brilliant 28yr old engineer) advised me to watch out for fembots. These are myspace accounts that are not real people set up to attact webcam subscribers.
I use my real age but have considered saying that I'm 100. I'm getting responses from people of all ages from all over the world.
http://myspace.com/thingsyoushoulddo
I also found a site called squidoo that is fun and easy to use. My site Irish Film Festival was picked as the Lens of the Day and I got some positive vibe and a little uptick in traffic. Best of all when you search on google for Irish Film Festival my squidoo lens is on page one (#9) out of one million plus choices.
http://www.squidoo.com/irishfilmfestival
Mybloglog seems like a networking meeting with all takers and no givers. So far it doesn't feel like a community.
Is it all worth it? I think so. My website traffic is up about 25%. My previous high traffic day was just a little over 600 and this week I went above 800 visitors twice. My logs don't show too much of that traffic coming from the social sites, but I've received a few links and on some of the google servers I'm now a 3/10 on my home page.
Can anyone else share any detailed results?
I think I'll start a new post with this info also - so I can get the squidoo info into the subject line.

Is Socializer dead now?
I am trying to understand how all this Social Bookmarking works and am a bit clueless - despite reading this and a few other threads.
I have a blog but am I supposed to submit it to these bookmark sites manually? I was going to use Socializer but it's not downloadable.
Help! (or point me to another thread I should be reading..?) :o

Note what I wrote yesterday:
The next is to use JavaScript to streamline the badges.
Here is the solution I made today (http://www.digitalstart.net/):
Scroll down to the link in lower left corner with anchor text "My latest social bookmarks".
Click the link one time and observe what happens.
Clcick the link a second time and observe the difference.
That is a JavaScript JSONP solution. You can not use AJAX, since XHR can, for security reasons, not access data on a remote server.
Importing data with JSON solves the problem (http://del.icio.us/help/json/posts/).
