Is google manually manipulating seach results? Is this another case of Google not following their own guidelines. You be the judge.

The google webmaster guidelines (http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=34444&topic=8524) state page's location in the search results are completely automated.

However David Kramer, an attorney from Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, who is representing Google (http://www.mybroadband.co.za/nephp/?m=show&id=3402) says Although rankings are based partly on a mathematical algorithm, Google also studies the quality of sites and makes subjective judgments

Greg Boser has raised the question whether google is manually manipulating search results (http://google.webguerrilla.com/forbes-handjob/)

Other than that, I haven't heard anything more on the subject.

This is no big secret. They even have a special place where editors can review search results to look for spam and try to improve the results overall. This was widely reported about a year ago. Wish I could find the link to it so I could share it with everyone here.

It kind of funny that people would believe that google can't manually tweak their serps.

The only issue is that Google claims "search results are completely automated"

Google has been manually banning sites from their engine for years. There's no reason why this can't also apply to other aspects of a site's ranking.

Google is sensitive to Ranking Litigation right now in the face of the KinderCare lawsuit especially. I don't believe they are going to act in a way that would put them at more risk on the legal front.
