View Full Version : QUESTION about PageViews per visit

Dear all,
I hope that I chose the right forum for this question.
Each time I present the monthly statistics for our various websites our marketing director comes up with the same question: What is a "good" value for the PageViews per visitor? For one of our websites we have 6-7 pages per visitor, for another only 1-2 pages. Does it mean that a visitor doesn't find the information he is looking for on website one or that website 2 isn't interesting enough? Or is it the other way round?
What is a good average to have? Is it even possible to generalize it that way?
Any comments will be highly appriciated!
Thanks in advance.

Hi Woody,
Maybe it depends - we've got an average of 3.41 pages per visitor this month - some months as high as 4 if I remember rightly in recent months.
A visitor could hit your home page, see your contact number at the top of the screen, call you and shut their browser. One page view per visitor then would be okay. However, if it's an online retail site, maybe it would take 5 pages to get to the 'payment' page. So maybe it depends on what you have defined as the 'desired action' you want the visitor to take when visiting your site.

Totally varies depending on what you offer (product/services) and how your information is structured on the website. If you require the users more clicks before they get what they want, then more page clicks per visitor can be expected. Of course the opposite is true as well.

I think you are correct in asking if this is even a valid question. Evaluating all the possible reasons why a particular parameter tracks the way it does is tough. Could be that your 1st site is more confusing to navigate so they bail and the second site customers find what they need easier so you get a sale. What you may want to ask is; do sales increase or decrease depending on the number of page views?

Totally depends on teh site. For an info site or blog 4 is pretty good. For a text based gaming site, 200 is average.

Right, totally depends on the site/industry. What works for one is irrelevent to another. That's why a more complex question needs to be asked relative whatever the goal is. On a commerce site sales are the bottom line right? So you must craft the question relative to the goal. If it is a political site then maybe the goal is to fill out surveys(polls)...
