I have been asked by a customer to build an Internet Directory capability for them. I am looking for a script (prefereably free) that will let them put up yet another Internet directory.

They want to approve the sites that get added, and have multiple levels of catgories, and (they hope) be able to charge for admission some day.

Any ideas folks?

Believe it or not, use a guestbook script. Works great with very few changes. Similar to a "add your link" script too. Mosly the same as any directory.
THey are actually classified as "yellow pages" type web sites, and NOT search engines or directories.

Have fun

I am not looking for a link swap script or guest book.

This company wants to build a bonafide Internet Directory, like a Yahoo or DMOZ directory. I really don't think a guest book script is going to cut it.

I know there are plenty of folks in this forum who run these types of directories. Do any of you have suggestions?

Yes, esyndicat is another great directory script, and I would say is the #1 competitor of phpLD. I think competition is great and helps both scripts strive to offer something more.

We are now about to release version 3.0.6, which I am very excited about.

One of the more notable items added to 3.0.6 is support for Paypal Subscriptions, which I hope will allow people to better leverage a monthly revenue stream.

Also, it is a lot easier now to "mass edit" (delete or approve) links (yipee!).

Another cool new feature is the option to use the new Ajax Category Selection mod.

Anyways, I think both scripts are great, though I hope you will pick phpLD. :)

Your footer says the script is FREE, but you charge for it on the website. What is up with that? Not that I think the price is too high (I bought it), but if you say it is free, you should make it easy to find and download the free version.

Just my too sense.

You could have used FDSE as well...

I used it once upon a time ago and it worked just fine up to 100,000 html pages. And it's free.

You may want to have another look at this one:
www.searchpurple.com
It says, looks and sounds like it's been hacked by a Muslim Hacker, to me.

Are there some security issues there yet?

Well I would suggest the php script called phplinks which is free and available at dew-code dot com it needs php and mysql to run but it is easy to install, setup and run.
