Well MSN finally has some fun tools (http://adlab.msn.com/demo.aspx) for the marketers in mind available at

http://adlab.msn.com/demo.aspx

Don't worry about going there with Firefox. None of the tools will work if you use it with FF.

Some of the highlight tools:

Context Based Acronym Resolution
Expand acronyms and abbreviations based on related search keywords.

Yeah acronyms are used in their algo. And we thought MS was so dumb.

Keyword Group Detection
Given a word or phrase, find a set of similar words.

One of my favs. Just like the Keyword Universe > Related Keywords Tool on Wordtracker, but actually from a real search engine point of view.

Keyword Mutation Detection
Detect frequent misspellings or alternative representations of the same keyword in search query log.

Pretty cool, common mispellings

Search Funnel
Analyze and visualize user search sequences in the form of funnels.

I think this tool is the most interesting and has the biggest potential for research. Right now it doesn't work well with longer tailed keywords. You usually have to use generic open-end keyword phrase, but it is interesting to know the keyword search patterns of users. How they jump from one search to the next.

Search Results Clustering
Cluster a set of documents, such as search results, into semantically related groups in real time.

Pretty much like most cluster search engines you have seen before

Search Volume Seasonality Forecast
Forecast seasonality patterns of search queries.

Just like Google Trends.

Demographic Prediction
Predict a user's demographic information such as age and gender based on his/her past behaviors.

Prett cool demo info on keyword and URL levels.

Their are many more fun tools to check out so I suggest you do so.

It is about time another engine besides Google comes out with some interesting tools to learn more about overall traffic and trends.

Yahoo are you alive and listening?

Thanks for the post - I'm gonna look at these over the next few days and perhaps report back.

The funnel looked the most helpful. I think especially in light of spam sites ruling many top positions. And if you can't rank well for the most searched term, try targeting the next.

For our general term of "CD Rates", the Group Detection returned lots of "unrelated" terms, but "Certificates of Deposit" was most helpful. Although, similar to the funnel, if people don't see what they are looking for, then what will they try next.

Thanks for the post and will keep checking back to see how it evolves.

I think some of us may have missed this back a couple of weeks ago, but new MSN AdCenter Lab tools are going to get a big boost of keyword data (http://publications.mediapost.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=Articles.san&s=44818&Nid=21195&p=366484) in the coming months.
