Hi

I like the new web layout.

But does this mean that all my posts under "Favorites" have all been wiped? I keep getting a 404 page not found message.

Please advise.

many thanks

Debbie

Sadly, favorites (not being part of the base phpbb install) are indeed gone. I will be bringing them back when I re-mod the forum which will be ongoing for the next day or so. I will put that one at the top of the list though.

When I hover over the link tabs they all disappear :(

Does this also mean that we have lost the ability to see our past posts?

That shouldn't be happening... They're working fine for me. If it doesn't stop, let me know.

No, you can still see your past posts (http://www.webproworld.com/search.php?search_author=frogmanandy), I just have to readd the mod that made it a little easier to do so.

I do like the lighter, freshy look and feel, but I think their should be more color defintion between the white message body and the table columns around it. The light green/blue is almost to light.

Why do posts like this:

http://www.webproworld.com/viewtopic.php?p=303363#303363

trigger the horizontal scroll bar? Yuck!

Not too shabby =)

I see a broken image on the footer... shows rss feed on the bottom of this page http://webproworld.com/posting.php?mode=reply&t=64078 that I'm typing my reply on.

Yeah.. with new things old things are lost.

Why such a big space between the message body text box when replying and the Topic review scroll box? Maybe the side navigation?

The horizontal bar is due to stretch dog's superlong url link within his post. Unmodified phpbb doesnt wrap/linebreak these. So that's another one that will be addressed with the remodding.

That's probably something Raf can fix.

Yeah.. we new things old things are lost.

The RSS stuff was the first mod I added. This is due to the fact that they are subscribed to in rather significant numbers and I didn't want dead feeds.

It is also one of the more involved and will take me a little bit longer to get worked out the way I want it. You have a link at the bottom of each page because the modification allows for the creation of feeds on a per forum/per thread and even a per post basis.

I also added (due to widley varying requests) user level preferences for your RSS feeds in the forum. If you check out this page (http://webproworld.com/smartfeed_url.php) you can see it in action. Basically it allows you to generate individual forum level feeds (or any combination of them) in multiple formats. It also allows for some sorting and viewing options that were previously unavailable.

I have had a lot of feedback about people wanting their feeds 'this way' or 'that way'. With the SmartFeed thing, those of you who do not like the way feeds are generated/organized/displayed/etc. by my settings, you can make your own.

Wow, this is the first major change in years. So far I like it. I think the tab disappearance has to do with the rollover images not being preloaded...

great work guys.. my only comment is: am gonna miss reading the chosen topics on the main hompage... and reading the daily quotes. I usually pass them on to my friends at work to cheer them up.

hope you bring back the daily quotes:)

Initially there was no provision to edit submitted posts. Good to see it back. Also do have the images preloaded.

The ability to edit posts did exist in the old version. You had 60 minutes to edit your post. That is a modification that I will be bringing back.

Tab images should be fixed.

I had actually tried doing a preload using css just to try something different but it didn't work out that well as you can see. So I've went back to the more traditional way of doing it with JavaScript and now the problem of the disappearing button should be solved.

Not only am I a big enough person to admit (most) of my mistakes, I'll even post 'em on the internet...

Case in point:

Last night, while getting some mods together to work on today, I found the preview/submit bug. I don't know how I missed it before, but I did.

The preview/submit bug was part of an anti-bot modification I put in back in December. One of the things it did (or was supposed to do) is that anytime a poster made a post that took less than x seconds (5 I think) then it gave them the preview panel.

I don't think it worked right. Needless to say, it isn't coming back.

Man, I wish I'd found that 6 months ago.

Oh well, we needed a redesign anyway...

Over all I like the new look.

IMO you should play with colours also. Try to use different colour scheme.

Also RSS Feeds do not seem to be working.

I subscribed at about 1500 (BST) and got about 4 posts from 1040 (BST again) and haven't had anything since.

I'm not a dan of the dark green - perhaps playing with some of the colours would be a good idea? Maybe go more blue with hints of mid to dark red?

RSS now works fine thank you.

And by the way, after that big debate about emoticons - they show up perfectly on RSS Feeds. :lol

Interesting layout - although personally feel that as a portal there too much information on the home page. There is also realistically a reliance on the viewer having an XGA screen resolution.

mike
06-02-2006, 08:41 AM
There is actually less information on this front page than the previous version. As far as assuming XGA capabilities, I can live with that. My cell phone isn't able to call cans with strings attached but I still manage.

LOL, I knew it was something like this. We keep telling you buddy!

On another point how are you handling redirection from the old pages to new. For example http://www.webproworld.com/forum.php doesn't exist anymore. Of course me and 1000's probably had it bookmarked. Now me, the rest of the world and the search engines get a 404 error header and then get redirected to the home page. You want to be handling this better. I am sure that URL had a bunch of backlinks that you are throwing away.

Also when doing this operator (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&q=site%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.webproworld.com%2F+incre diblehelp&btnG=Search):

I see many dead or not functioning links.

Excellent observation and yes I do know about that. The /forum.php should have been 301'd already but I can't do that myself. Should be fixed very shortly though.

As for the operator you're talking about, I knew that one was going to happen but i didn't see any way around it. The script that generates the static archive of the site you're seeing isn't in here just yet (it's a mod in other words). Once it's in however it should replicate itself (I hope anyway).

Well, I guess I'll be the lone voice here. I like the new color theme! It's soothing, easy on the eyes (oh boy, showing my age here ;P). It's nice not to be "assaulted" by bright and demanding colors as a lot of sites do.

Thank you, guys, for all your work!

I am still seeing odd behaviour from the tabs (forum index, search engines, marketing etc) When I roll over them they disappear and if I roll from right to left over each they all disappear and take a second to reload ... if i continue to hover over forum index it takes quite awhile to reload them

A double set of the left hadn section caused my post to be moved below the screen as you see it (I forgot to put a subject) I nearly somply closed the window thinking the pm was successful...

Yeah that would be my fault. I accidentally put in the code for the left column on the error body. I've removed that and hopefully it should fix that problem. Let me know if it doesn't.

Thanks,

I miss my "favorites" :(

mike
06-12-2006, 04:22 PM
'Watched Topics' is the same thing pretty much. The only significant difference being that the favorites did not email notify. Watched topics do email notify upon new posts.

I strongly suspect something in the old 'favorites' mod was interfering with notifications. So, they aint coming back in other words. Try the Watched Topics tab (it's at the top in the green tabs) the functionality is very similar.

1) What happened to the search facility within the forums? It seems now we can only search subjects. Advanced search is only available under forum index pages.

-------------------------------------------------------
http://www.paulbilton.com/webproworld_01.gif

2) The odd rollover effect is an IE6 and below speciality. It works fine in FF. The way round is:
a) to not use white for the font color. If it were gray it would at least show up on the white background.
b) don't use graphics for the swop effect, just use color changes
c) set a background color the same as the graphics and not white or transparent.
d) don't use CSS for the swop effect.

Your posts are in the sandbox... LOL.

Or maybe they've all been in the breakroom, as that doesn't count. I don't usually pay attention to that number myself. Then again, I've got a big enough number that I don't care either way.
