View Full Version : Add to Cart - Left or Right

After a lot of experimenting, I have found that keeping the add to cart button above the fold is a wise decision.

Now, I'm wondering if anyone has any experience or testing results between putting the add to cart button on the left or right side of the page.

Obviously the site layout is also relevant in determining this. Here is a page from my site for the layout in question: http://www.merchantequip.com/omni-3750.php

Let me know what you think...

My vote: To the right or *perhaps* below the item/ description.

I offer this opinion as a consumer not a developer ... that's where I look for the add to cart button. I look for the view cart button at the top right of the page ...

Excellent question jestep.

My OsCommerce site puts the button at the bottom of the page. see

Long coffee machine description (http://coffeemachine.com.au/royal-cappuccino-coffee-machine-p-34.html)

This is bad as it's difficult to purchase but may not so much of a problem for big ticket items.

I'd prefer to see a button at the top right AND at the bottom. You want it as easy as possible for them to give you money. Now I just need to learn PHP to format the page.

Hi jestep,

Overthinking or what, where are all the rest and where do people expect to find them.

A bit simplistic and I can see where you are coming from but it boils down to design basics. Top spot in any newspaper, magazine is top right , top corner.

eBay and Amazon have the buttons on the right side which definitely means something. Your sites buttons are placed more or less the same as eBay or Amazon which would mean that most users would find it exactly where they expect it to be.

I always expect to see the button upper right.

Ozzyjim on your oscommerce site, I would recommend moving your button above your product listing or you could even place that box above and after your product.

I think the description is very good, but it is also very long, and I am sure that you have customers who don't want to read that much and already know that they want that product and just want to click to check out.

My mouse arrow is always on the right side of my window while I am browsing. It has always iritated me that I can't put the back button on the bottom right of my screen also.

Where do you leave your mouse?

I was on the best buy site yesterday and I noticed that their add to cart button is on the left side. Normally I wouldn't even think anything, but any time a huge site like that uses a certain format, there is usually a good reason and significant testing behind it.

I personally like the right side better and will stick with it.

If your audience are reading from left to right it should be on the right (after they've read what you can supply).
Absolutely agree on 'above the fold', so therefore would suggest the best solution is upper-right.
Also I'd like to suggest a different colour or look for the button; after all it is a call-to-action. In this case a gentle, solitary red would stand out well amongst the very pleasing blue scheme you have.

Definetely on the upper/right. Besides here is an interesting study about this and other e-commerce issues: http://psychology.wichita.edu/surl/usabilitynews/41/web_object-ecom.htm

I agree with everyone else, right side is best. Just like zbikenut said, I keep my mouse on the right side of the screen, so I like having links/buttons there. When are all the webmasters going to move their navigation links to the right side of the page?? :-D
