Hey labyrinth,

That really bites !!

here:
http://www.smartftp.com/
http://www.coreftp.com/
http://www.bpftp.com/
ws ftp (http://www.ipswitch.com/downloads/index.html)

I haven't tried any of these, so I cannot endorse them. WS ftp may be the best of the lot. Also some of them may be trial versions, but atleast it'll help you out now.

WS_FTP is an excellent program; I've used it for as long as I can remember! You can download WS_FTP Pro from FTPplanet.com (http://www.ftpplanet.com/download.asp), it's available as a 30 day free trial. There's also WS_FTP LE which is free for non-business use.

http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/documentation/
SSH support, Drag'n'drop explorer interface yada yada. Just found it, thought it might be worth a look, free of course...

FileZilla
FileZilla is a fast FTP client for Windows written by the Open Source community. It features everything that you'd expect from commercial products retailing for $50 or more, including:

Ability to login into SFTP and SSH servers
Drag and Drop support
PASV mode
ASCII and Binary modes
Session Keep-Alive functionality and timeout detection
Full CHMOD support

Nice find Mik!
You'd expect to pay $$ for a fully featured program like that - nice one!! :o)

Came across a whole selection of freeware FTP programs on WebAttack.com - take a look!
http://www.webattack.com/Freeware/network/fwftp.shtml
The top 4 rated programs were: ACE 3 Free, Morgul, SmartFTP, and Whisper FTP Surfer.
(Filezilla and WS_FTP LE were just pipped to the post!)

The program FTP Commander is free and does a fairly good job of handling almost all needs. Ws FTPpro is excellent but not free. Persons with nameservers using one common IP usually cant use the IE for FTP access. Only sites with their own IP are usually capable of using FTP access via IE.
As a professor I have taught hundreds how to use the FTP commander and it usually takes a few minutes.

Well let's hope labrynth_of_fire has managed to sort out his problems. Thanks for all those extra suggestions guys! You'd never think you could get so many variations of such a simple yet vital program.

Sorry to keep this going, paulhiles, but I want to echo Dr. Richard C. Rebeck

I am on my own DNS, and I cannot use IE.
That is a serious security flaw, isn't it? I really don't know, I am green like grass.

However, I was just lucky, I guess, to start with FTP Commander, and I use it to maintain my site. DreamWeaver leaves all kinds of crap up there when you change things around - ie. if you want to move a group of pages into a subdirectory/folder, it doesn't just add the folder info to the FAT, it writes all new pages inside the folder, and the old ones are still taking up space.
With 'Explorer' type interfaces like Commander, this can be easily avoided.
It also gives all the 'communication's' that transpire between client/server interface (Yikes! lol)

I like FTP Com. anyways.

Good FTP program can't be free.
You can use Total Commander or FAR. It's good software also and to FTP.

Yes, totally agree... Cute FTP is the best FTP prog. ever... I first downloaded the trial version, but puchased before the trial had expired.

You'll find it @ http://CuteFTP.com

I third the recommendation for CuteFTP, but before I found that, I was a die-hard WSFTP_le user, both are good programs, but if you are looking for free, I recommend WSFTP_LE, and highly recommend CuteFTP for a cost effective FTP program, that will also allow for quick HTML editing on the fly

Hi,

I use coffeecup software V.1 from http://www.download.com

Its cool unless you have a proxy server to run through.

I have used a couple of ftp programs including the coffeecup, CuteFTP, and WS.

The one I have found to be the best so far is ACE FTP Freeware (http://freeware.aceftp.com/)

On topics like this it would be nice to add a straight poll to the page (once enough people have made their suggestions) so we could see at a glance the favourite free and paid ftp progs.

http://www.worthburning.com - if it's worth anything it's worth burning.

I must admit the thread has slowly but surely turned into "What's your favourite FTP program". The original post from labrynth_of_fire was asking for help and suggestions with the problems he was facing at that time.
I can add a poll now, however I can't guarantee that everyone who offered suggestions will return to vote.

Do you know why It didn't work?

I think that if it worked for your purpose the way you say you liked it, and you were happy, maybe we can to the bottom of it.
It sounds like a software conflict with something else. Make sure to turn off as amny progrgams as possible before installing - especially Anti-Virus cause they can be brutal on DreamWeaver installs (which uses FTP).

If you are looking for simple straight forward, and easy on computer resources and the registry during install, FTP Commander is awesome. I've never had the slightest bug, no matter what 'TONS' of other progs I have installed and a running at the same time.

It is so straight to the point, two side x side windows with the folder views beside each other, and all the transfer info below.

I like using it WAY BETTER than DreamWeaver, and any o5hers I've tried, including "cute FTP", and even some others that aren't mentioned here.

It is very uncomplicated to use. And reliable? Sheesh!!
:o)

(guess what I voted for? lol)

Good luck, you are good attitude guy, and like when you post.
