keyword stuffing

is it considered keyword stuffing if you are trying to cover every possible search engine query from a potential customer? dont you want as many possible words so that no matter what they put i you will come up if others are not using that phrase or wording. why do search engines consider it stuffing. what is the maximun # of words you should have?

Yes stuffing all possible keywords into one page is "stuffing". Of course optimizing a keyword or two on each page of your website is a better route to go. You might want to search the forums for some newbie sections. I don't think WPW has any of them sticky, but I know HighRankings.com (http://www.highrankings.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=833) has a decent one.

Jeff. It certainly is considered stuffing, and also its not very effective. Its really not possible to try and cover every possible search term, and truly impossible to do it on one page.

The trick is to be SELECTIVE and FOCUS - do the graft of finding the right keywords and then write copy around those. Rather than trying to do it al on one page, look for the natural ways you can break your content down into smaller "bite sized" pages focused on smaller related groups of keywords.

That way each of those pages can be properly optimised, with the right keywords in the right place.

If you try and pack too much into one page it becomes too diffused, and won't perform well for any of the words you are stuffing it with.

And maximum number of words? I guess when you've said what you need to say to your audience on one topic, then I guess that's the maximum! for some people its a book, and others a hundred words. Write what needs to be written, focus the text on the target keywords (forget what your english teacher told you about repetition) and it'll be close to right.

Because my home page links to all of the major category sections of my web site, all my keywords are on it.

And what is most interesting is that even though I try to optomize each category page, it is very often (but not always) the home page that Google shows as a search result....the one with the keyword mentioned just once or maybe twice at most.......and not the category page that I worked so hard on optomizing.

In my case I am definitely not stuffing my home page. Maybe that's why it works that way. It has all the words on it so visitors can navigate my site easily.

Hi Weedy Lady. I find that a lot with Google too - I'm told its to do with all the individual page links pointing back to the home page, so it sort of "floats" on the links from the pages below (be interesting to hear if anyone agrees with that). I find with Yahoo and MSN that individual pages tend to have the higher positions (although not always).

No need to apologise! william is my 5yr old, and he did the fish at school and put it on his bedroom wall. I was trying to get my 2 yr old daughter off to sleep one night (2.00am job), and also idly mulling over design ideas for something a bit different, and *ping* there it was. so William and I spent a happy Saturday afternoon with paintbox and photoshop...

It all depends on which search engine you are optimizing for. It seems that with Google if you just sprinkle some optimization here and there you will get picked up by them, but not any other search engines. Yet with Yahoo and MSN if you optimize fully throughout the site they will pick you up, but not Google. I know its all Back-Asswords. As far as Keyword stuffing I would not optimize more then 15 words on a signal site the last thing you want is to get "Black Listed" from the search engines.
