index page and page ranking

I'm new to the whole page ranking and internet marketing. But what happened is, that I had a index page (www.businessforsale.com.au), after I took this page away I dropped with my page rank. Then I added the page again and my page rank went up.
How is this possible? And how can I move this page without dropping?

Your "index" page is usually the default home page for your website. When you say you "took it away", what did you replace it with? How would people enter your site after you took it away?
