I never really had time to think about this, but it seems obvious to me that a given web page dedicated to a particular subject, let's say brown shoes; filled with content about brown shoes, and keywords and description all about brown shoes, would have a better chance to come up higher on search results with a keyword of brown shoes.

But let's say my business is selling brown shoes and white socks and my homepage has text and links related to both subjects, and I reference them both in my keywords and description. Will this adversely affect my homepage rankings for brown shoes or white socks? Will the reference to white socks work to remove relevance from brown shoes?

Now, I know that I can have a link from my homepage to a page that will be totally dedicated to brown shoes, and that the SE's will pick up on the link and the content and index that page higher, but let's say I'm worried about my homepage, because there's a bunch of links to cool things about both brown shoes and white socks and this really cool thing we just found called black shoes and this other cool thing we found called grey socks.

Do I loose relevance for my other keywords for my homepage?

Hey guys, this really is a serious question. I just used some silly terms to get an answer. I hope I didn't come off as "joking."

But if it is a silly or stupid question, I apologize to the forum.
