I'm working on an article about ToolPartsDirect with the angle that we're doing something to help reduce the number of tools being sent to the landfill. Once I get this done, it'd be nice to get it distributed across a network of some sort.
Barring someone coming up with a forum entirely on syndication, are there any good sources of information that I can read up on article distribution?

None that I've ever seen, Brian.
But unless your article is non-partisan (and things like what you're talking about usually aren't), it would be considered more of a press release and should be distributed that way instead of as an article.
As far as that goes, it's "write PR, find distribution partner such as PRWeb.com, open wallet, and hurry up and wait." There really isn't much more to it than that.

From the searches I've done, I'm not expecting much to be out there. If it is, it's not search optimized so I don't know how much I'd trust it for SEO advice. ;-)

If you want, you can test isnare.com distribution service, I think it is 2$ per article. A good way to see how it goes after a while.

You could just manually submit to some of the top ones. I usually hit the ones below:
www.goarticles.com
www.articlecity.com
www.ezinearticles.com
www.freearticlehq.com
www.articlesfactory.com
www.articleworld.com

Manual submission or paying someone to do manual submissions is the only real way to handle that.
I wrote a PDF file on it before. This is a freebie you can download at: http://www.calissaleigh.com/ArticleDistribution.pdf

Hi -
There are dozens of free article directories out there, and many of them have been listed here by other posters. Pretty soon you will be looking to find ways to make the job of article submission automated. This is when you are able to multiply your efforts about a hundred times - with much better results! If you want info on getting the automation done easily then contact me, i'd be glad to help.

If you want a way to easily distribute an article widely then try http://www.articlemarketer.com
Once you submit an article it is then fed straight out to other article directories for them to publish.
I believe it is a paid for service but they have just announced a special offer that affiliates can promote saving $100.
Also try http://searchwarp.com
