There ARE many surfers who "mistype" ESOTERIC as well as common queries, they could be common misspellings as well as incorrect phrases...

eg: Web site -v- Website will appear as two words and bring up different SERPs on Search Engines

other examples...

Developement,
Graphics Design,
Optimization -v- Optimisation
ecommerce -v- e-commerce (e-business)
even The Bealtes, The Beattles
or Britney Sprears -v- brittany spears

has anyone tried optimzing Aesthically Pleasing Doorway pages eg. Flash / DHTML Intos - redirects to lure in some of this potentially vibrant traffic

I have noticed about a 15% increase in traffic in many cases

and making the Doorway page entertaining in itself - seems to elevate it from "SPAMishness"

I used to use doorway pages. Not anymore. My advice is to stop using them unless you know how to hide them well. All the primary search engines can detect doorway pages and drop you from their ranking.

I think it's a little redundant to have duplicated content, only changing spelling of a few words.

Better - Glossary of terms, and in addition to your 26 a - z pages have some fun with common mis-spelled words online a - z.

If the glossary is in your link hierarchy, they can quickly negative to pages of interest.

For every advantage there is a disadvantage - one being people who didn't make a mistake noticing that you did, and you losing credibility.

The only exception that has worked for me is for common variations--i.e. when searching for spinal disc information, about 1/3 of users search using disk instead of disk.

(This might also apply to regional usages for spellings as in UK/Canadian/Australian English words (program/programme, color/colour, etc.)

As far as doorway pages--here in the US the major search engines' ability to scan for duplicate content on a sub-page level (by paragraph, and possibly even by sentence or sentence groups) has effectively eliminated the benefits of using doorway pages. On real competitive keywords, I have done work for clients optimizing doorways for specific search engines (and using meta robots and roobts.txt to block undesired search engine spiders/bots from those pages...) but it's a real headache to create, and a significant nightmare for the poor soul who has to regularly update the site content! (IMHO the client loses more in costs than gained by the slight traffic increase due to engine-optimized pages...food for thought!)
