I've seen it in tripod, angelfire, livejournal, etc(before they started using subdomains). I only get 5 subdomains for my site total. Right now I have users accessing their page through a query string (ex http://eliteskills.com/u.php?u=1 ) I wanted to know how the sites used to have the user pages through domain.com/~usernamehere/ . What does the '~' mean in that and can this be done with just php and mysql? I'm not sure how to search for more information on this.

Hi elite skills,
One way that the '~' is used is when you have your own dedicated Ip address, like a reseller account.
A reseller sets up a new account, using the same nameservers and IPs. The domain.com/~usernamehere/ is useful to check the site's pages before applying the nameservers to the domain name.
eg) One of our clients http://www.fxstudios.ca/~giftofth/
but it's also live here www.giftofthyme.ca
Hope that makes sense

I see now. Thanks for the info ;). I guess you have to have your own server or reseller account then. I was hoping it was some kind of query string type action that grabbed the user info. Thanks for the reply, that's a nice looking page. Could use some shapening on the corner image thoug.. Congrats on the logo contest. Has that cool Xbox feel to it.

Yes, well it's the only way that I know of, where you use the '~'.
Shapening around the corner image? not sure what you mean?

Ment to click edit but clicked quote. Typo'ed the first one pretty bad. I just mean sharpening the corner image(right) in the clients site. It's really blurry and that hurts the style of the site.
