View Full Version : optimising for phrases

If I optimise a page for a phase such "good cholesterol" and follow all the rules I can find for that phrase so that the page is optimised for that phrase....but then in the rest of the page the word "cholesterol" happens to be repeated alot of times (in context) will the se, because of that disregard the page.
I am making a website that is about cholesterol, and in order for the content to be clear the word cholesterol just gets repeated alot because it is included in alot of phrases. I have tried removing as many of the repeats of the word cholesterol as I can but it bothers me that it makes the page not read so well, its like I am trying not to make the page spammy but in doing so have to remove this word that make sense of the content.
I hoped maybe I could disregard the fact that on some pages cholesterol was too many times, and the se would also disregard and only see that the phrase for each page that i was focussed on. But is it that by not taking care of the one word, the phrase i am targetting will suffer?
The site i am making is at cholesteroldoc.com, on the first page, I wanted to put all my major search terms, ldl cholesterol, bad cholesterol, good cholesterol, etc, but ended up removing the word cholesterol leaving just good, bad, ldl, etc. in favour of not making the page spammey for cholesterol alone. But is it a mistake?

chandrika - first off, it looks like you are violating Adsense TOS by having 4 block of ads on the page - I thought the limit was 3? (I could be wrong on that) -
Anyways -
Don't worry too much about having too many instances of the word cholesterol. Remember, even Google says to create pages as if search engines didn't exist - so if it makes sense to the reader to include a certain word x amount of times, then do it.

Oh thanks, ok I think then that I will put some back in that I removed. And will bear that in mind on the next site I build.
The adsense units allowance is 3 ad units (the boxey ones) plus you can put one link unit in also, and one search unit. So there are 3 ad units and one link unit (at the top) so I think, I hoooope, I am within the guidelines there.

Well it will be interesting to see. Its a bit of an experiment. My first site I did and didnt read much about SEO, it was about hairstyles and was ranked really well, got loads of traffic within a week of submission.
This time I have done some reading and gone to quite alot of trouble to follow alot of the rules. So it will be interesting to see what happens. The site on cholesterol I only just submitted and google is slowly spidering it, has done about 8 pages so far, and I am eager to see whether it gets anywhere or not after the trouble I took balancing keywords and stuff.
I guess I should leave it as it is for a while just to see the results, then for next time i will know whether going to such pains is worth the effort.I kind of hope it was,so that there is some kind of formula that can be adhered too you know.

Agreed Aaron. Write natural with good original content and you'll be fine. The SE's aren't that evil :)

Hi Chandrika,
See the above, like any advertising you are trying too hard to emphasise how you think people should be looking for you.
The key is to find how people are really looking for you and the search terms they are using.
Fact. Most people uses a single phrase (I bet it is not cholesterol) they will be looking for something related.
That search could be ? words.
Do you get the drift of where I am coming from?
Keith
Best of luck

Hey,
I did not see a link to your site, but in order to target "good cholestrol" and get ranked on Google high. Be sure to hyperlink the actual words to another page about maybe "benefits of good cholestrol." This technique definitely helps get natural listings on Google.

Chandrika,
given the seriousness of your subject the site looks a little too jazzy and commercial. Remember also, there are numerous examples of inappropriate adsense ads. I'd advise you to be a little more subtle.
I notice that the site is not yet in the google index. You need a link or two.

Yes you are right, although in terms of content I was thinking about the end user, I guess in terms of design I was pleasing myself. The animated cholesterol Doc may have to go.
It is however a comercial site. The main thing is that I am selling a home cholesterol testing kit, which is one each page at the top. So in some ways it is being presented as it is, instead of trying to look like anything more than it is. There are links there to the American Heart Foundation and all the major expert sites which could provide what the site does not.
It is true that I may make a few cents if someone clicks out via a google ad, but I honestly see them also as a useful resource for people, I try to make them stand out from the rest of the site content so as not to be confused with in site links and to keep the site content clearly apart so it is more obvious that the blocks are ads for people.
The ads that show up here in England at my location are all very relevant, I hope that the same ads appear everywhere but am afraid that different locations produce different results, so am a little disappointed to learn that some ads seen were inappropriate ones. I will look into it and try and filter out anything I ever see that is not in keeping with the theme and irrelevant to whoever may be browsing.
I have only just submitted the site to the SE, I am not very confident that it will get ranked or get much trafic, because i saw somewhere that the number of sites about that theme are quite numerous, i will as you say try putting some links ,then I will wait and see and if it does by chance get traffic, I will implement some changes.
I optimised page 1 for cholesterol, then each other page is an attempt at optimisation for a different phrase, home cholesterol test, diet for lowering cholesterol etc.
I really appreciate these comments, I certainly had not considered some of these things but am doing so now.

I have seen that the densisty of the target phrase is for Google around 1 to 3% and Yahoo allows 5 to 8%. I write naturally and have realistic occurances of what I'm targeting. Also I try to keep the needed occurances close and use different forms of the word IE property and properties. Good Luck

Chandrika,
I've always understood that red wine was good for lowering cholestrol levels. Can't you convince the people at Google Adsense to loosen up a little and run some booze ads.

Off topic, but it does not. Red Wine actually builds up in the system, I tried that one on with my Doctor and he grinned and said 'In your dreams David'

CTABUK,
I was talking about a glass or two.
I've always wondered about some of the strange associations made between adsense and the topic of a page. When you check out Chandrika's site the adsense boxes all come across as pretty dull.
I feel a blog post coming.

Just wanted to comment on your site design - I thought your colors and the animated doc were fine for your target audience. If you were targeting physicians, I would agree that it looks too "jazzy and commercial," but for the average person in their 40s - 50s - 60s I think it's fine. I might want to see fewer Adsense boxes!! Just my 2 cents...
You have lots of good content on a very important subject. Good luck!
