I have heard that your pages could be penalized if you submit them to google manually instead of waiting for the bot to crawl them. Any truth to this? Is it better to submit all your major pages?
Thanks,

You heard wrong. If there was a penalty for this I would be furiously submitting my competitors sites to get them a penalty.
Submitting to Google is a waste of time and effort --> it makes no difference.

I think that what you might have heard is that some people subscribe to the notion that if the bots find you through links from elsewhere rather than submissions, it will treat you better. I really don't think it matters. I always submit and submit all pages to goog.

I would work on links and not even worry with submiting the site to Google
While I agree with Janeths post to some degree lets look a bit into the future when Inktomi may (will??) become just as important as Google.
Inktomi is not noted for finding and indexing your pages on its own and its even hard to find a place to submit to Ink without PFI. So you will have to develop a strategy to deal with this.

It matters to "goog" as you call them. It specifically states that you do not submit a page to them at all. More to the point, the only thing you can submit to them is your domain name....period.
If you are submitting page(s) to Google, then it is a waste of time.

I think you may well be right on that Mel. In fact I submit the Home Page and Site Map for inclusion and that is it. Seems to work out pretty well for all their downline SE's that use their results.
Of course even that strategy may change now that they are part of Yahoo, but there is still Fast and a couple of others that it will work on. And for the money, it is a pretty good investment IMO.

Hi Mel,
What Janeth said was I would work on links and not worry with submitting to Google I was not talking about all the other directories or search engiens.
So I guess that means that you agree with me to more of a degree now.
