Interlinking My Sites

I'm thinking of building some smaller topic specific websites (business cartoons, animal cartoons, etc...) and linking them back to my main site (http://www.andertoons.com). I'm hoping the smaller sites will widen my search net while giving a boost to my main site. I don't intend to link back to them from my main site.

The thing I'm concerned about however is being penalized for havingtoomany interlinked sites? Any ideas on how many is too many and if this is even a good idea anymore?

Your concern is well founded, it is a good idea but you have to realize that you will have to work on all these sites for about 6 months to get some benefit to reflect to your main site.

Your new websites will not have any page rank to pass to your main site for a while

Your new websites will be sandboxed by Google from anywere from 3 to 6 months so will not be ranking high in SERP.

So you will probably see results after 6 months if you go ahead on this.

You can link to your main site by using your keywords and phrases in the anchor text of the supporting sites.

You just have to remember not to overdo it.

One thing to remember is to host your websites on different server / companies.
