Inquiring on an older system. Win98. ISP , AOL
All outdated software, nothing new added except Norton Internet security 2005. Has Adware and spybot programs running.

Problem: All at once.. computer continues to re-start automatically after Shut Down. Any ideas what may cause this? Maybe a stuck "short cut, Keyboard key" ???

Check the bios settings, there is usually an option (depending on age) that lets you choose what happens when the power goes off. If that doesn't reveal anything fall back to my almost standard spyware solution, reinstall Windows :)

Can you log off and then shut down? If you can, then it's one of the programs that is running. Mind you, that's a long shot.

Did you also try posting to annoyances.org ? Those guys know quite a bit about this sort of thing.

Is there a blue screen before its about to log onto the desktop. Then it counts a memory dump to the hard disk and reboots?

If so and the error code is a 8E then its a display error. Try logging in using safemode and disable the display card. Then see if it still reboots. If it doesnt then the wrong display drivers may be installed.

If none of this is true then I recommend downloading stinger from http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ and running that in safemode. If that doesnt come up with anything then also run a full scan using your main anti-virus application.

Also you could try running msconfig and taking everything out of the startup section to see if its a piece of software that's doing it.

I have encountered similar problem with win98. After re-installing, everything is back to normal. I do suspect that it might be due to a program that is causing this problem. You can also try the Force shutdown program. It does help at times.
