Affiliate programs for charities

I have a charity but i dont want to advertise, i have heard of affiliate programs but i dont really know how they work. Can some one tell me would it be worth while for a charity and how it works exactly.

I think I read that the Red Cross just signed up with CJ, but no one gets paid a commission - not affiliates or CJ - it's just for affiliates that want to help the cause.
