hi,

I was wondering what is the best way to sell ad space on my website. We have a busy website and our suppliers would like to pay for advertising on our site in order to be chosen by our visitors.

We never had time to sort out the problem of offering ads on the websites, but now would like to take advantage of it. We will have our own advertisers, so the problem of customers is sorted out.

I guess we would have contract number of impressions of ads.
But how to count these ads? Shall we use some sort of software? If so, which would you suggest? Or do we need a company, who will audit the number of impressions and be some sort of warranty for our customers?

I have completely no idea of technical solution for such thing.

Can you help?

Thanks,
wlodi

p.s. I hope this forum is the best one for that sort of question...

I have been using phpAdsNew for a while now and am very pleased with it. It is popular open source software so that means it is free and well-supported. You will need to have PHP and MySQL installed on your server to use it but most hosting plans have them installed by default or at least offer them as optional services.

We use Cliffs banner Rotator. Try this link http://www.freescripts.com/ and see if you can find it or other Ad servering programs.

Cliff's Banner Rotator is a nice script that gives banners stats and click thrus and all the goofy silly crazy fresh gumby gold information. Good enough for your advertisers to access.

It is written in perl so you have to install the program and also it does SSI and executes scripts from html. You insert a code like this

The code will then serve the banners in rotation based on weight.

Now if you are really cheap and cheesy, you can do this method.

Create a landing banner page for your advertisers. Create an image banner for your advertisers. Then use your weblog to extract information. Meaning the weblog will show how many times the advertisers image was served and also how many hits the banner page received. This will just give you an idea not so accurate.

If you go to the cheap and cheesy method, then I suggest get out of the business if your going to treat clients and customers half ass.

When you sell space on your ad, you can:

1. Charge a flat rate for the month or year for the space used. The higher the ad onyour page the moreyou charge.

2. Charge by impressions.

3. Charge by Clicks.

4. Other stuff like for the moment I can't think of anything else.

I also think you can use phpAdsNew.

It can do the work you need for your website.
