I searched to see if I could find an answer to my question because I know that 301 redirect is discussed a lot here. I did not see anything that answered my question, so here goes.....
I have a website that is with another company and does not allow me to edit my code. The page is already set up the way that they want it, and I make no changes. This does not allow me to optimize it for the search engines. It is like having an Avon website that every avon representative has.
I would like to build a homepage, that is optimized for the search engines, then put a 301 redirct in it.
Here is my question: Will the SE read my homepage that is optimized? Will this homepage help me get listed above the 1000s of other websites that are exactly like my website? Any other ideas how I can get listed high?
P.S. I do know how to optimize for the SE. Well, sort of. I am listed #1 for a few keyterms on another site.
Thanks for your help!!

If you actually 301, nobody would see the current homepage (spider or human) and they would just see your new one. 301 is a "Permanently moved" status code that redirects the browser to the new page, be it human or spider. If you're not allowed to change the homepage, then you don't want to do a 301 as you will be changing the homepage.

You don't put a 301 in a page. You use a 301 to move one page to now being another. If you just want to place a link from your homepage to the new page, that's a different story.
If you really want high rankings in Google or MSN, you will mainly need to work on getting incoming links. This is going to be tough, though. It sounds like you're going to be duplicate content, so whoever has the most links (or whoever was spotted first in some cases) ends up with the ranking.

Simply put if you would like to get the website that is hosted with another company ranked you must get access to the website. You could do lots of work with IBL's to that page without touching it, but still efforts could be for not if you cant get into the website and make necessary SEO changes.

Nice site. But to address your problem, but you will need access to your site. Do you have access to your url? And if you do, can you upload to your site? If so, you could make your own intro page, load it with keywords, such as pretty rocks, christmas gifts, family jewels, etc. Then that will increase your clicks. If you have about $20 a month to spare on advertising, google has Google Adwords. It is a PPC (pay per click) type advertising. It works to a point.
Also a trick, you might want to change your banner to a gif file and put some meta data in it. That is a bit old school I think, but some earch engines actually check meta data inside images. Ulead's Gif Animator 5 allows you to do such a thing. I hope I'm not getting too technical for you.
I will say, I feel that you recieved your url and site from the e-commerce company of subject, correct?
The BEST advice I can offer you is : get a business card, go to some of the religion-based businesses, strike up a chat and leave a few cards there. Then go to a bridal or wedding dress location, leave a few cards there. When I say a few, I mean about 50.
You are e-commerce, so think out of the box. Website searches are nice, but remember, when you are one in 300,000 and you are only on the web, word of mouth via friends and local businesses can help out a lot.
I'll add you to www.catch-the-frog.com (www.catchthefrog.com), that may get you some hits once it is started up.
I hope this helps a little.

Hi LantanaD,
There is a solution to your problem.
First let me make sure I have the facts straight. You are an affiliate marketer or independent agent trying to earn commissions on sales. A merchant or vendor set you up with "your" own replicated mini site. Other than changing a few required details you cannot alter the content of the mini-site in any way yet you want to optimize the page for searches.
If that is the situation, you can't do it. You have to do something else instead. The next best solution is to build a highly focused pass-through page -- if your primary goal is to send targeted traffic to your mini site. The page should be very simple, approved by your vendor or merchant, and lead only to your personalized mini-site. It's only purpose is to grab a higher share of searches than the rest of the replicated sites and quickly channel them through to your merchant. This is like you were thinking, except that the page does not redirect, it links directly to your mini site. Visitors will have to click a link on your site to get there so you can't just throw in all the SEO stuff and walk away. It would be interesting to see which site, your mini-site or your pass-through SEO optimized site, converts best.
Something to ponder . . .
After your visitor leaves your pass-through and make a purchase on your mini-site, they become the merchant's customer and you usually cannot contact them. But, if your pass-through page primarily sought to capture new members to your hot ezine full of things they want to hear about -- such as what they can find on your mini site -- then they become your customer for as long as they want to get your ezine, regardless of who they buy from using your links along the way. And it's a whole lot easier getting people to sign up for something free than it is to get them to buy. After they get comfortable with you they will buy more than ever!
Good luck to you and have fun.

Just so this is clear. I am not referring to my jewelry website. I have total control over that. By the way thanks for listing me catch the frog. I have already gotten a few hits from it!
I am referring to a Gold Canyon Candle site. The company gives you a website that is just the same as a thousand others, without allowing us to use our Meta tags. I want to stand out above the rest. How do I do this?

Why would you care about metas? Those don't do much for rankings anyway. Links and page content are what you'll need - in that order.
What you will want to do is create a website on your own that you can optimize how you see fit, get lots of links to your site, create lots of candle related content and then drop interested parties into your Gold Canyon Candle site through a link from the site you just created. This will make the unique part (your new site) without making you touch the GCC site.
Sell from your site, then drop them into the order taking site.
