[via HDblog.net (http://www.hdblog.net/index.php/2005/06/10/jvc-offers-red-laser-hd-dvd/)] Can someone please put the DVD industry out of its misery? JVC is introducing a red laser high-def DVD player (http://pro.jvc.com/prof/Attributes/press_res.jsp?tree=&model_id=MDL101546&itempath=&feature_id=08), because, as they say, "the industry isn't going to wait for blue laser players." Well there's an absurd and self-fulfilling statement if I've ever heard one. The industry, by definition, *hasn't* waited, *because* you're releasing a red laser player!

Yes, the Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD war is annoying, and yes, it'll be terrible for consumers if the camps don't sort out their differences and agree on a single standard. But it's not exactly an agonizing wait. Toshiba's planning to have an HD-DVD player on the market this Christmas -- just three months after JVC's red laser players hit the stores. Blu-ray will be available inside the PS3, and likely elsewhere, not long after that. Meanwhile, only 11 percent of US households tell us they own HD-ready TV sets, and the number in Europe is even lower.

Two competing high-def DVD standards is more than enough to waste the time and money of consumers, CE manufacturers, DVD distributors, and everyone else. We certainly don't need more than two.
