I had to post about this to ask about it.
First I am not complaining at all.
But All of a sudden I am #2 for
webmasters information
Any ideas? Is this a fluke?
Or is it Googles reindexing?
I am scratching my head trying to
figure out if it was me making changes
or not.
I dare not do a thing and enjoy the ride
while it lasts.

What a difficult question to ask, I have just looked at your tags, and I would ask others to do so too. Just go with the flow, if you on a roll, go with it.

You don`t do too badly at all for webmasters Information (2 of 7,510,000) well done.
But for webmaster Information (197,000,000 possible results) or information for webmasters (7,570,000 possible results) Nail these and you`re a long way there!

Thanks for the response Black Cat.
I know the difference a letter makes.
Webmaster verses Webmaster(s)
(smile) I am looking for some brain storming
and ideas on the why and the how.
For instance if you were trying to break into that
SERP of (197,000,000 possible results) or
information for webmasters
(7,570,000 possible results)
How or what to do.
How to get there?
Any ideas?

The number of possible results has nothing to do with how competitive a keyword is. We rank for custom site design out of 53,200,000 but get very little traffic.
But to answer your question, if I wanted to rank for a competitive keyword I would work with getting links to my site.

Well that is really odd. If sitting on
top ranked # 1 for specific key words
does not bring traffic.
What is the purpose of being ranked
well? It was my impression that sites compete
to rank for keywords words Joe searcher would use.
Then when the site ranks on the front page.
The odds are good Joe searcher would click
their web site. Thus bringing web traffic.
External links from good high traffic sites bring
traffic. Am I missing something about the concept
of rank and listing on the front page for specific
key words?

We rank #1 for "tool parts" on all the majors. This term doesn't bring much traffic though. We rank #5 for some other terms that bring a lot more traffic. My guess would be that "custom site design" doesn't get searched nearly as often as "website design" or "web design", and that's why that doesn't bring as much traffic.
Wordtracker shows the following:
web design 7014
website design 2905
custom website design 271
tool parts 40
webmaster information 3
webmasters information 0
That supports my theory.

Ahhhh... ran my word tracker and got the
same results. Now I am wondering what
all the fuss is now about the rank and
list in the majors.
I'll check more words.. and the results.
Then tweak for effect.
Thanks for the info!!

The fuss is that if you can rank for the proper words that people are searching for, then you can get loads of traffic. Personally, I see at least 4,000 unique visitors daily. I know there is a lot more potential out there, because I know which of the 40,000 terms I'm targeting my websites are ranking for and which of those would most likely result in a lot more business.
It's a game of numbers. The more people you get to your site that want what you have the more successful your site becomes. I think that's what we all strive for.
One word of caution, though. Just because wordtracker says 0 doesn't mean it never gets searched. They get their data from a select few search engines, not from the majors last I checked. So it does give you an idea that a lot more people search for one over the other, it doesn't mean that a term isn't ever searched for anywhere.

It depends on the keyword. At one time we ranked on page two for website design and got a ton of traffic. But just because your on page one or at #1 does not mean you will get the traffic.
We rank for a lot of search terms and together they bring a lot of traffic everyday. But never plan to make a living off being ranked for one or two search terms.
