Over the past few months the number of results for a given search term has increased dramatically. For example, results for the search term "unusual gifts" which yielded 7 millon results a few months ago, now yield 27 million results. Does this add any value to Google as a search engine? The top sites seemed to have maintained their positions despite the increased results.

A few months ago google increased its index size to 8 billion from about 4 billion. There's no way that the extra 4 billion pages actually have any relevance at all especially if you analyze the way the google algorithm works. Its basically making them look bigger, and not adding anything of importance to the search engine except for some numbers. The extra results are just extra junk that google threw into the index.
