View Full Version : Alexa Ranking Preventing Partnership?

Before my Alexa ranking was as good as it is now, before I was even in the top 100,000, a company refused to trade links with me because "You're not even in the top 100,000!" they said. What's funny is, they had approached me first. My question is, and I know from reading the other threads that this has been discussed some already, is it really that big of a deal? I know from the other comments made that Alexa only samples a small portion of all web traffic and isn't necessarily the greatest place to get accurate info, but would you base your link exchange decision on Alexa rankings?

I know for a fact that the company in question is very much in line with mine as far as content, offer, etc. so it wasn't an issue of unrelated linking. It ticked me off a bit at first then I decided I didn't need them anyway. But the question remains, would you do the same as they did?

Anyone that would not trade links based on Alexa is not very smart and not worth the time to worry about.

I tend to agree with that statement.

I agree but alexa does count the amount of links to your site, and google and other search engines do rank on links in.
If you have not allready done so, download the alexa tool bar, and visit your web site three to four times a day, then your rank will increas rapidly.
Also visit most of the pages on your site to help.

Alexa rankings are so dodgey that I was able to (as part of an experiment) get a site from a ranking of >1,000,000 to 35,000 by installing the Alexa toolbar on my home computer, office computer and my wife's work computer - we clicked on the site 4-5 times a day from each computer (excluding weekends for the work ones) - within 6 weeks we were down to 35,000 !!!! To help maintain the ranking, I have now installed it on my mum's computer - its around 50,000 now.

Leisa - if a partnership with that conpany is important, why not do the same? Otherwise, I agree with Janeth - they are not particularly smart.

What if someone downloads and installs the toolbar and then figure out a way using a software to keep hitting its own pages 24/7. That will skyrocket the alexa number to less than 1000 - correct?

Correct and IMO a good example of why an Alexa ranking is worthless - you can pump it up easily yourself or better still add the toolbar to fifty of your employees machines and ask them to visit the company home page twice a day every day.

If anyone can't get to alexa's webpage check your hosts file. Spybot S&D adds it as one to block.

Doubt it. They will have a system in place to only accept one click every so often from a particular IP address.

Not sure what its set at - could be one per day or something like that.
