Tony Blair confirms DNA tests.
hmmm....wonder what his fate is now?
I do hope that millions of $$'s aren't spent on trials now.

wow we've been watching CNN all morning down here in Florida...they just showed video (during the press conference) of Saddam's medical exam shortly after capture.....seems that even the most incredulous Iraqis are also now receiving the news of the DNA tests....

Thanks for the headsup -- I guess I've changed my login procedure when I get major news first on here -- had to run off to Google News to make sure that this wasn't the beginning of a humor thread, though :)
An explosion of mixed feelings accompanied the news. First of all, at least part of me wished that it had been "Saddam's body was recovered," as I don't even know who has jurisdiction to try him. The Iraqi people have the most right, but do they have the infrastructure to do so? And, when one speaks of the Iraqi people, are we discussing the Kurds, Shiites, or the Sunni? Will this cause increased unrest and military actions or less? If tried by the Iraqis, will this allow for closure and moving forward as a single people in a single nation or bring it to full civil war unless a major occupying force remains? If a major occupying force remains, will this cause more unrest or less?
Since Islam is a religion without an infrastructure, i.e., no official hierarchy of clergy, could he effectively be tried by the Saudis, keeper of the Sunni tradition? Perhaps, it's time that Islam consider setting up their own International court for dealing with people such as Saddam, Osama bin Laden, et al. Is it even possible to conceive of the Sunni and Shias being willing to set aside historical animosities to form such a judicial body? Perhaps, this is what is needed to bring them into the year 2004 as a unified religion. As Islamic extremists continue to wage war throughout the Islamic world, not just agaiunst "the West," an Islamic International Court that represents both factions AND the various Islamicly dominant nations might give them more credence and a forum for a unified stance against extremists.
While this is a pivotal moment, I think that it's only an opening chapter in another sequal to the ongoing saga of "One World, Many Perspectives."

I'm looking at his medical examination on the news now.
I just hope this means his followers lay down their arms and the foreign fighters (those using him as an excuse, or financed by him) go home. If not the opposite will happen with an inevitable increase in the number of attacks, on both civilians and our boys.

i think we all were in a worldwide ecumenical "holy cow that's saddam hussein w/ a tounge depressor in his mouth" state of animated suspension
i have a few middle eastern Efriends who have already emailed saying that people are like just gasping in the middle of the streets in muslim countries everywhere at the site of the former iraqi dictator on tv getting a military medical exam after the capture...people are either just stopped in their tracks listening to radios everywhere and/or firing off ammunition wildly into the air....
and to contrast that we shift back here to the continental 48>
the media will be lovin' this christmas season no doubt.....both on the broadcast journalism side & the entertainment side......
the jokes already already coming in too....so i share:
"apparently Saddam asked for a cherry flavored lollipop after the medical check-up"

When the coalition took Baghdad they abolished the death penalty. Aparently recently the Iraqis have been talking about bringing it back in. And Sadamm is meant to being tried in Iraq. Iraq has an interesting future to unravel.
I think its great that the Iraqis are feeling even more liberated now. While it was good to show him defeated & resigned like that, I do however wonder what message that does give to other oppressors & terrorist leaders...being warned or retribution. If they thought the entering of Baghdad was a memorial event, this is even more so. They finally got him !
The next medical I want to see is Osamas.

I am promoting this local article for the benefit of free information. It's my article on the Kurds here in Hull celebrating the unbelievable Saddam capture.
I am so pleased for us all at this, it reminds me of the hurt of September 11th, maybe it heals that a little.
Have a look at the link.
