Hi,
Just used a great tool at www.keyworddensity.com
It said my keyword density should be between 1% and 7%. I used the tool and it showed my keyword density was 9.6%.
Here's the interesting part. I had just been to one of those sites where they tell you if your web page is ready for the search engines or not, and one of the things I was told was that my "alt" attributes were not optimized. So I put my keywords in the "alt" attributes of my images.
Back to keyworddensity.com. I removed the keywords from my images "alt" attributes and my keyword density is now 6.43%. Right on target.
Goes to show you that you have to really test and be ready to revert to backups after using these types of sites.

Did someone say "Ottawa"? :-)

All it takes is one major disk crash ("it will never happen to me") for that to be clear...
Back to keyword density, though, it's another one of those things that is of uncertain relevancy. I think it's a factor but of what magnitude? Just now, experimenting with my major keyphrases, I fond that they all seem to vary within the "good" range, according to accepted wisdom. On the other hand, my current best phrase (defined in this case as listing on Google) has the lowest keyword density within the half dozen phrases I looked at.
...which (even recognizing that different SEs make weight this factor differently) makes me wonder how important it is...

In your meta keywords tag, you should only use keywords/keyword phrases, that are actually in your content. I read that for Yahoo this is particularly true.
According to Net Mechanic, the article "Big Changes at Yahoo", keywords are even more important now. Here's the link to that article.

Further read this from "On the Scene at Search Engine Strategies" by Garrett.
Where's Google Going? Danny also talked briefly about the future. Google is currently repsonsible for 76% of results on internet. His prediction for the search engine landscape in January, 2004 is that Google will drop to 51% and Yahoo! will be responsible for up to 43% of all search results, with AskJeeves having 2% and other search engines controlling 4%. The reason for this? Danny believes Yahoo! might be partnering with MSN sometime in the near future...
What do you think this would mean for the search engine industry?

I decided that I would optimize for customer first and then search engine. Here is my reasoning on it. Doing so is only logical. As search engines get more complex, they will look more and more for relevancy, not less. Therefore if you use keywords that are included in your content you are tightening the theme, directly more highly targeted traffic to your site, and the more relevancy the search engines look for as they progress, the better you will rank.
My original point was this. Regardless of who does or does not use keywords, "stuffing" the image tag alt attribute raised my keyword density, perhaps unnecessarily or in a way that was not beneficial. Also, the alt attribute should give information about the graphic or function the graphic is supposed to represent.

P.S. re: Ottawa
Ot·ta'·wa, named by the Indians, it means: "Village of Big Idiots" :)
(Just kidding! For those who don't know, I am also from Ottawa.)

Way to go, danno... you do realize that you have now set us up for merciless spamming by Leafs fans?
*sigh*
Yarrr! Avast! Have at it, cyanide and Greyhawk...
You have to forgive them... one has so few opportunities for gloating when one hopelessly roots for the Leafs... I mean, it's been almost 27 years!!!
