About blogging, this will sound dumb...

Hi All,

Sorry to sound dumb - but what is a blog or weblog exactly?

From what I can gather it appears to be some kind of news feed (??) I've searched the forum but all the references seem to be from people who already know what a blog is and hence don't actually explain it. Also checked a couple of the blog site links and can't really work them out either...

Is it likely to be able to help my page ranking? (really need help after Googles last fiasco)

I could be wrong but this is my understanding.
The reason a blog works so good is because you are adding pages every day.

The amount of pages add up fast which in turn helps build your pr which helps you rank higher which gets you more hits.

That is the short side of my understanding
