Newby looking for help

Hello folks,

I have just got my web site up and running, I have been considering getting the site optimized but it is just out of my budget at the moment. I have heard the you can 'submit' sites to search engins and was wondering how to do this? I know the site needs some metatags and content, which I am working on at the moment, I will be having more spare time for web development as christmas gets closer. Can anyone recomend a book or paper for web development for beginners?

First of all, don't fall for any of the "Click here to submit your website to 10 Billion search engines!" offers. At best, you'll simply lose your money.

Next, get some high quality links into your site from other sites, which will let the major search engines "find" your site on their own. This method is by far faster (and you'll get higher rankings) than submitting. You NEVER need to submit a site to Google.

Next, submit your site to the major directories, starting with the Open Directory Project (www.dmoz.org). I don't recommend paying Yahoo's evaluation fee. That $299 IMO is much better spent on other website marketing strategies.

Finally, seek out smaller niche search engines and manually submit your URL (Re-read the first paragraph).

The best paper out there is what you're looking at: the forums. They are the cheapest and offer the most up to date information. The problem with most books are they are out of date in a matter of a month. However, to learn the general idea of SEO, look to the forum masters. One in particular, Jill Whalen, offers her book for around $50. But, in my opinion, use materials like these only for reference.

In submitting to the sites, you can head to the major search engines themselves, DMOZ.com, and establish linking relationships with other relevant businesses. These ideas, however, can be found throughout all the forums and in books. Happy hunting!

After 4 months of patience with dmoz, I finally got my website listed.

Few weeks later, it appeared in Yahoo directory and my website name can be found in Google search. Gradually, some of my product brands and key words got listed in first few pages on Google.

Does dMoz deserve the bulk of the credit? For the benefit of a doubt, you got nothing to lose to keep trying for dMoz.

Maybe, but all you needed to get into Google was a link from a page that was already in Google (in your case it could have been DMOZ).

Once you got into Google, you were automatically in Yahoo also, since Google powers Yahoo's default search results.

I doubt if you're actually in the Yahoo Directory however, since that requires a $299 payment just to have them evaluate your site (with no guarantee that they'll include it in the Directory).

Hi,

I agree that forums are great for creating links to your site to help with Google and other search engine position. Here's another tip: try adding a weblog to your site, if you are inclined in that direction. It seems to have worked for me.

By their very nature weblogs get indexed quickly -- for two reasons, I think. First, the content is frequently updated (assuming you update regularly...I do). Second, you can include lots of links to other blogs, news sites, etc. In turn, that naturally encourages other blogs and sites to link to your blog pages (trust me, they'll find you!).

Now, I don't claim to be any kind of expert on search engines, not by a long shot, and perhaps some of the experts would care to comment? Was my experience just a coincidence, or is there something to this?

Welcome to the forums!

In our opinion, once the site is optimized, you should submit it to as many places as possible. Some say you should only submit to the 20-30 largest sites, but if you do you will be missing out on some of the traffic the smaller systems can bring you. Plus if you are concerned about links, most of these sites are nice little search engines and directories and can help your site in that area. Also, many of these small sites may not be that small in a few years. After all, Google use to be a cute site with a stupid name run by college kids....

But you did not get one piece of advice that is crucial to your site doing well, and while you may be doing it, there may be others that will read this thread and not know it.

You need to do some keyword research to find out what to optimize your site with that people are using to find what you are offering. Most professional SEOs swear by www.WordTracker.com's service, but we have been using the free program from www.GoodKeywords.com on over 50 client sites, and it works just find to give you what you need for good results.

Oh yeah, about Blogs...they do work well and I think it is because they have the most important thing that you can feed a search engine: words! Refer to you scored keyword list after optimizing your site and work them into your blog and I think you will see that it works really, really well.

Yes it is true you do not have to submit to Google to get listed although it cant hurt to do so.

There are 2 ways to get indexed into Google fast 1 being get your link on a website that is already indexed into Google it dont matter what the page rank is NOT AT ALL.

And the second and my favorite method is to build a website and misspell the keywords and title in other words make a site no one has.

Even if your the only and number 1 website for that search term that never gets looked up once your in then your in.

Then simply put the link on the site that you want to be picked up and after its picked up by Google then remove the all misspelled website.

Now your main site is in Google and you did it yourself.

And yes I agree never us the mass searsch engine submission services it can do more harm than good sometimes.

I don't know much about the optimization of search engines, but I do know as long as you have a meta tag and good keywords you can submit your site fairly cheap. I submit my site with a compnay called Autolink. They submit my site to the top 400 search engines for only $21.00. My site was placed on all the major engines within 6 to 8 weeks. They have great customer support, and offer a live chat program on their site. Their address is www.autolink.4t.com/main.html that URL will take you strait to their page so you don't have to wait for the intro to load. Hope this helps!

Yes I have read his post, However I will say I have to disagree. Their may be some "rip-off" sites out their but the company I deal with submited to all the major ones for very cheap.

I will have to say letting a machine submit it for was a big help and alot easier than going trough and submiting to each search engine manually, and paying a different fee for each company.

I submitted to the engines about 4 weeks ago. I have got a little spam but not much only like 10-12 a day verse the what I hadd before submitting was about 8-10 a day.
