THE YEAR 1903 (inspired by WenWilder)
The year is 1903, one hundred years ago... what a difference a century makes. Here are the U.S. statistics for 1903....
The average life expectancy in the US was forty-seven.
Only 14 Percent of the homes in the US had a bathtub.
Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.
A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost eleven dollars..
There were only 8,000 cars in the US and only 144 miles of paved roads.
The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.
Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million residents, California was only the 21st most populous state in the Union.
The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower.
The average wage in the US was 22 cents an hour.
The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year.
A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist 2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about 5,000 per year.
More than 95 percent of all births in the US took place at home.
Ninety percent of all US physicians had no college education. Instead, they attended medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press and by the government as "substandard."
Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee cost fifteen cents a pound.
Most women only washed their hair once a month and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo.
Canada passed a law prohibiting poor people from entering the country for any reason.
The five leading causes of death in the US were:
1. Pneumonia and influenza
2. Tuberculosis
3. Diarrhea
4. Heart disease
5. Stroke
The American flag had 45 stars. Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet.
The population of Las Vegas, Nevada was 30.
Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented.
There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.
One in ten US adults couldn't read or write. Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.
Coca Cola contained cocaine. Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at corner drugstores. According to one pharmacist, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and the bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health."
Eighteen percent of households in the US had at least one full-time servant or domestic.
There were only about 230 reported murders in the entire US.
Just think what it will be like in another 100 years.
It boggles the mind...

1903 was also the year two gentlemen, by the names Orville & Wilbur Wright, built a 'crazy' contraption in their bicycle shop in Dayton, OH-- and flew the first airplane!

Only 14 Percent of the homes in the US had a bathtub.
In 2003 I still cant figure why you would have a shower in a bathtub & a toilet in the same room! And they say aussie are backwards ;-)
Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.
In 2003, only 8% actually answer them !
A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost eleven dollars..
In 2003, a 3min phone call from Perth to Sydney costs about $4...whereas a 1hr phone call to the rest of the world cost $5...go figure!
There were only 8,000 cars in the US and only 144 miles of paved roads.
In 2003 a LOT more cars in the US, but still driving on the same old roads.
The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph
In 2003 they are still using imperial measurements !
The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower.
In 2003 it makes a good paper weight.
The average wage in the US was 22 cents an hour.
In 2003 there are still sweat shops paying not much more to illegal immigrants, or better still, get it made in Taiwan!
Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee cost fifteen cents a pound.
In 2003 we now pay twice the retail price just to have them not genetically modified & pumped full of homones.
Most women only washed their hair once a month and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo.
In 2003, egg yolks are still a common hair treament.
Canada passed a law prohibiting poor people from entering the country for any reason.
In 2003 you have to be poor and disadvantaged just to get across the border in Canada.
The five leading causes of death in the US were:
1. Pneumonia and influenza
2. Tuberculosis
3. Diarrhea
4. Heart disease
5. Stroke
In 2003 the leading causes of death in the US are dictated by how much strong hold the lobbyist groups have on the govt at the time. Is it smoking this year? Or is it drugs, AIDS, etc? Whats the fashion at the moment?
The American flag had 45 stars. Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet.
After listening to Jay Leno interview them in streets, I'm sure they dont know how many stars are on it! But thats OK...they can ask us...we're prob more versed in their history ;-)
Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented.
The iced tea is a bit disputable...it might not have had ice blocks tho ;-)
There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.
In 1903 it was always Fathers Day. In 2003 is still is !
One in ten US adults couldn't read or write. Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.
In 2003 I hear its more like 2 in 10 cant, and 4 in 10 cant very well. And you can graduate without knowing how to.
In 2003 people still use all the ingredients, just not in the one can...now they mix it with rum ;-)
Hasn't changed that much IMO, just more policies to say it has ;-)

Saves space... you can have three people getting ready for work at the same time - four if you count the one shaving at the washbasin...

Aussies pump their immigrants full of hormones?
Most women only washed their hair once a month and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo.
In 2003, egg yolks are still a common hair treament.
...and a nice breakfast snack...

After the cat's finished having it's little drinky-poo - that is, which takes about 6 tries - sniff's the water (Yikes) flinches "oh fifi , too fast?" - now to slow and the stream breaks into seperate drops and the 'parched *****' with the lightening quick talons if you even hint at flinching away the piece of turkey he's been locking in on since you first put it on your plate at the beginning of the Christmas dinner so you figure that MAYBE this will be the day that he takes it straight out of your hand but no the cat that was having siezures three seconds ago when he realized that he had stared you down good enough into giving the turkey to him before your wife catches you but the turncoat won't take it NOW, before you get caught although he looks like he will but then he suddenly looks down and sniffs at the ground no I didn't drop it you stupid cat it's still in my fingers 2 inches from your face but when it was on the other side of my plate above the table you never took your eyes off it then for about twenty minutes straight so hurry up I'm gonna get caught oh forget it SLASH! HOLY F!bleep Im F!BLEEPING BLEEDING HERE!! COME THE F!BLEEP HERE YOU F!BLEEP!BLEEPING ... but that was then and this is now and cant seem to time the water drops right so you make about 4 more adjustments to get the stream of water 'j-u-s-t r-i-g-h-t' and then you try to pet him and he runs away so, now you can shave![/quote]

Ahhhh the good 'ole days when things were still made naturally! Oh wait! I still make things the old fashioned way. :)
It's amazing how much money you can save. Take a dozen eggs and you can make 12 bottles of shampoo - 8oz each. Depending on the shampoo you purchase that's almost 24 dollars saved. And the best part is, if someone happens to drink the shampoo you don't have to call poison control, just make them some toast! :)

Meaning Dayton, Ohio, & I never said I was alive then in 1903!

...Didn't you say you were from Austria?
No.
What I said was "...How'd I get dragged into this? I'm Austria here!!" (http://www.webproworld.com/viewtopic.php?p=46463#46463)
I meant to say Switzerland!!
A reference to 'official' neutrality (not taking sides)of said country, Switzerland and others, during past World Wars.
"I here that's a nice town."
It's probably a very nice COUNTRY, never been there myself, though!

This was certainly an interesting year for news... here's a selection of some of the big stories...
Panama Canal Constructed - The United States immediately recognized a new regime in Panama. The regime broke away from Columbia after Columbia rejected the Hays-Herran Agreement for building a canal. Immediately upon recognition, the United States began negotiating for rights to build a canal across the isthmus. It received those rights, and construction began.
Entente Cordiale Established between France and Great Britain
Russian Socialist Party Splits in Two - (8/03) At a meeting in London, the Russian Socialist Democratic Labor Party split into two factions. The first faction, led by Vladimir Lenin, was called the Bolsheviks, and believed that party rule should be restricted. The other group, known as the Menshiviks, believed in a more open party structure.
Ford's First "Model A" - (6/16/03) Henry Ford began selling the "Model A" auto for $850. His goal was to manufacture reliable cars at a price all could afford. His mass production methods would soon change the automobile industry, and eventually the world.
First Messages Sent over Pacific Cable - (7/4/03) President Theodore Roosevelt sent the first message across the Pacific Cable. The message connected San Francisco and Manila.
Helium discovered. - Helium, which occurs only very rarely in nature, was discovered in Daxter, Kansas.
"Wright Flyer" Flies -(12/17/03) On December 17th, man's first flight in a heavier-than-air vehicle occured in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The inventors were Orville and Wilbur Wright. In the first flight, the plane flew for 12 seconds for 120 feet.
Plus, Marie Curie was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for her work with radiation.
Must have been a busy year for any journalists!

Only problems found is ~
1.) The neighbor's chickens all have an urge to sit on your head.
2.) When exposed to extreme heat, your head turns yellow and lumpy.
3.) You have this Humpty Dumpty rhyme thing that goes through your mind over and over and over and over....

Did a bit more digging on our friends the Electric Six, I mean the Silver Seven!
Stanley Cup Champions
1903 Ottawa Silver Seven
1904 Ottawa Silver Seven
1905 Ottawa Silver Seven
and then purely to annoy minstrel the Toronto Maple Leafs went on to win the championship in the following years: 1932, 1942, 1945, 1947, 1948, 1949, 1951, 1962, 1963, 1964, and 1967.
Mind you, resting on their laurels (excuse the pun!) for 26 years hasn't done them any favours! ;-)
