Can't post in Opera nor Firebird

I just tried to make a post and both Opera and Firebird are both returning No post mode specified. Having to post in Internet Explorer and as you know I bloody hate Internet Explorer.

I'm starting to think so because I logged out on Firebird and now I can't log back in. Only thing I have done is install a new anti virus and I can't see that having that effect. I updated my Firebird to the latest nightly as usual but can't see why that would affect Opera. Something for me to look into I think. I'll try again tomorrow to see if it's just a glitch.

WPW is now optimized for Internet Explorer - other browsers admitted only if accompanied by a blonde.

Have you done anything recently to your security/privacy settings in those other browsers, like disable cookies?

What was the new antivirus program? any added features that might be interfering?

The anti virus is Kaspersky. I can't see why it would affect post data and nothing else. Even more puzzling is why only those two browsers.

If you're using IE successfully from the same machine, I agree... it must be something with the browsers or something the broswers are sharing...

I don't know anything at all about Opera - never used it - and I only recently installed Firebird - I assume Firebird at least uses a different directory for cookies, etc., like Netscape - could it be corrupted files (cookies)? Have you tried deleting cookies and/or a disk scan? A registry problem, perhaps (or aren't you using Windows)? Can you do a system rollback?

Opera and Firebird both use their own code for doing everything, they share nothing. I thought that the cookies may of been a problem so deleted them and then couldn't log back in. I'm at work at present and they frown upon my conecting the laptop to the network so can't tun any tests til tomorrow. Norton Utilities says everything is fine and a virus scan is clean. Oh well nothing of importance on laptop and only installed 98se again last month so if I have to I'll just start again from scratch.

The fact that you "couldn't log back in" strongly suggests a cookie problem - I've had that happen with secure websites twice and both times it was corrupted cookies. When you say you "deleted them" do you mean selectively? or all of them? As I recall, WPW sets at least two cookies...

If all cookies have been deleted, why aren't Opera and Firebird allowing WPW to create new ones, as should be the case if the cookie isn't located. What happens when you try to log in? What error message do you get, if any?

Actually I tell a lie, I didn't delete the cookies I used the LOG IN/OUT link to log out. I can't see why cookies would affect my posting and return the error it did though.

I don't pretend that I understand exactly what happens when a cookie is corrupted (or for that matter why it would affect both Opera and Firebird at the same time) but I can tell you that was the culprit in the past for me - twice - and in both cases the sites just weren't letting me log in - it was a while back but if I recall correctly I wasn't getting an error message when I tired - it just kept kicking me back to the log-in pages. Since WPW uses a second cookie, I presume to keep track of what posts you've visited/viewed (??), it could also be interfering with your ability to post messages.

Having said that, this would seem to me to be a more likely hypothesis if one browser were affected - the fact that there are two affected and you tell me they don't share anything is bizarre.

Try getting rid of the cookies anyway and see if it makes a difference.

Actually I permanently logged in on both Firebird and Opera but not IE so it's sounding more and more like cookies. Will erase them now for testing later.

Ok I have deleted all cookies in both Firebird and Opera. Can now login on Opera but still not in Firebird. Maybe they screwed something up in the last nightly.

I confess I don't really understand how total chaos is avoided with this open source stuff... nightly downloads? I'm not sure I'd have a lot of confidence in anything that needed to be updated that often...

lol no a nightly is basically when they compile all the work they have done that day. nightlies are not recommeded for the squeamish.

Just reinstalled Firebirds nightly and it's fine now. Must of just messed up on downloading.
