I wish to upload software to customers

After my customers purchase my software, I'd like for them to have the option of downloading the software rather than wait for delivery by mail. I guess it would work like this: Customer clicks add to cart button at site, he's taken to a secure site where he leaves his information, credit card number etc. Then after his card clears, he's given the option of downloading what he purchased. He downloads it, and he's happy since he has the program imediatly. I feel my sales would at least double if I had this feature. Any thoughts on how to set it up?

Well, from looking at your site, you seem to be early in the development of your site, so I'll respond in general terms.

Are you planning on using a shopping cart, or just pure html? If you are going to use a cart, they may have a feature that will let you do this. If you are going to use just html, you will probably have to use .htaccess to password protect a directory, and after a sucessfull credit card transaction, they are shown to a page that gives them the username and password. This option is far from secure, because the buyer can just give the password to his buddies, then they can download it too.

I guess someoneone with more experience doing this kind of a thing without a cart will be more helpful here. If you do use a shopping cart, I always suggest osCommerce (http://www.oscommerce.com). It's free, but it will take some learing to get it to do what you want.

EDIT: of course the third option is to use some server-side scripting for something like this. You might be able to find some free examples that you can use, or at least get you going in the right direction. Do some google searching and check here: www.hotscripts.com .

We setup an electronic product distribution and tracking system for http://www.blockthepop.com/. In addition to emailing a tracking download link to the end customer on purchase completion we also use generate a registration key for the product.
