Phishing is one of the fastest-growing forms of personal fraud in the world.
1. Legitimate businesses like eBay, Paypal, AOL, Yahoo, Earthlink, MSN, Microsoft, AT&T, Hotmail, FDIC, MBNA, Citibank, Barclays iBank, Nat West, Bank One, Nationwide, Halifax and Fleet Bank do not send out emails asking for your credit card number or personal information. If you receive an email asking for this information contact the company first, do not provide the information in an email or through a visited link provided in an email.
2. Forward a copy of the email to the company and/or one, or all, of the agencies listed here (http://www.webproworld.com/viewtopic.php?t=22085). If reporting to only one agency - please send the information to the FTC (https://rn.ftc.gov/pls/dod/wsolcq$.startup?Z_ORG_CODE=PU01).
3. If you would like to check the validity of the link provided in the email Millersmile provides a link checker (http://www.millersmiles.co.uk/Link-Checker.php) on their site. Simply follow the directions provided.
4. If you use IE or Mozilla - a bug exists within Internet Explorer (this bug has been patched in IE, as of 2nd February 2004 (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS04-004.mspx)) and Mozilla browsers which allows others to disguise the true destination of a link. Millersmile provides a URL Bug Checker (http://www.millersmiles.co.uk/identitytheft/oah-3.htm#URLCLOAKING) that allows you to check your browser for this vulnerability. Make sure you read the caution about McAfee anti-virus.
5. Remember, emails can be forged, links can be spoofed, and valid company emails will never ask you for personal information, passwords, credit card information, usernames, social security numbers, etc.
6. Always questions the validity of an email and it's link. Contact the company before filling in any form provided in an email or following any link.
Asking questions can save your financial future, credit report, and many many headaches. Just remember KISSS. = Keep all Information a Secret for a Sense of Security ;)
