I recently got a little message in my hotmail inbox letting me know that I just received an acount upgrade. Now I have 250 megs for my spam account and can receive attachments of up to 10 megs. I assume that this was a general gift, though I've seen no news about it.

The war between Microsoft and Google appears to be escalating rapidly: Google slaps down gmail. Microsoft tosses the beta search into the arena. Google doubles its results. Microsoft ups the ante in the e-mail department. Those last 3 happened inside of 2 weeks.

Pretty soon Google will anounce that it's been developing email tracking and will send us $250 for everyone we send the message to.:)

Personally, I think this is a clear example of why competition is good for the consumer. I get better search engine service, more room for my spam, and, to top it off, it's all for free.

I agree and the competition is spreading is Operating Systems, with Linux and Sun making the running with Open Source products. I suspect that the Pax Microsoft era is drawing to a close.
