I just read Olivier Duffez's article in today's newsletter and his survey of back links required to attain a given page rank.

I'm very familiar with Links in general, but not familiar with the term "Back Links."

Can anyone explain?

Pegger,

"IBLs" (Inbound Links) as they are called are interpreted differently by the individual Search Engines. Each of the top 3:
www.google.com
www.yahoo.com
www.beta.msn.search.com
have different sets of algorithms that determine SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) placement.
They all have many "Technical Guidelines" that are published and are in congruence with each other to some extent.
One of those that they agree on is that the more Incoming Links that a Site has, obviously it is more important to the Internet Community and consequently ; must be a more relevant Site.... So they get a higher ranking and higher SERPs.
A while back though Google got on to the scent of link "spamming" and a year ago they started "castrating" "Black Hat SEO" spammers.
Going forward we have arrived down the line of natural progression where that reciprocal links do not count as much as truly "organic" links.
I don't believe that you can find a more true historical sysnopsis, in as little space!
I hope this helps,

By the way - Welcome aboard WPW!

So it's apparently just another term for inbound links. Thank you all for your comments. Great being part of this group.

Pegger,

Please note there is now a "strata" of value associated with different kinds of IBLs.

Do you have any evidence to show that reciprocal links are in fact downgraded, Ken?

Hi Mel,

Haven't seen you around in a while..

The obvious answer is: not other than by the severity of "Sandbagging" and "sandboxing" of all links and the general consensus across many forums!

I hope I didn't seem more conclusive than that.
