As we all know .ca domains represent Canadian domains and .com domains well, would be anywhere I guess but my problem is this. My wife's website is http://www.totalhomecare.millennium-hosting.com .

If we search on yahoo.ca for maid service mississauga we are listed at #6. ( http://ca.search.yahoo.com/search?vc=&p=maid+service+mississauga )

For yahoo.com (not Canadian) for the same search (maid service mississauga) we are listed at number 1. ( http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=maid+service+mississauga&sm=Yahoo%21+Search&fr=FP-tab-web-t&toggle=1 )

Isn't it logical to assume that Yahoo Canada would give a Canadian site higher placement?

Anyone's understanding is appreciated. Is there something we're doing wrong?

We are Canadian, hosted by a Canadian company and domain name is www.treetreasurescanada.com. A search for "christmas ornaments" under yahoo.com shows us at number 35. Under yahoo.ca, we are nowhere to be found (at least not in top 100) for "christmas ornaments".

But, even more interesting, searches for "canada christmas ornaments" and "canadian christmas ornaments" both show us taking number one position in yahoo.com but we are nowhere to be found for the same searches in yahoo.ca. Yahoo simply does not appear to recognize us as Canadian.

One of the things search engines are now applying with more regularity, is geo-tracking / locale.

Okay, so you're in Canada. Well, how do the search engines know this?
Either by the domain extension (.ca) OR server IP in Canada. It appears, either one will help.

In my personal opinion, the domain extension is more important than ip address

cyanide,

Where are you physically hosted? I run an American Company based in New Zealand and hosted in Rhode Island.
