At the office we've got 3 PCs - one XP, two 98s. Email works fine on the two 98 machines, but not the XP machine. The account settings used on the XP machine work on another XP machine at home. The account also works on the 98 machines with minor adjustments.

WinXP Settings for Outlook Express 6
Pop: pop.domainname.org
Smtp: smtp.central.cox.net
account name: emailaddress

Win98 Settings for Outlook Express 6
Pop: localhost
Smtp: smtp.domainname.org
account name: emailaddress/pop.domainname.org

This network is connected via a hub with static IP addresses and trusted IPs set in ZoneAlarm.

The error I get with the XP machine in the office is the "recipient rejected by server"

please help

Hey,

the win98 machine is looking at the localhost for the email server and xp machine is looking at a domain name, if this is on an internal network is your host or dns records setup to resolve the domain name for the xp system to the 98 system?

Also try disabling zonealarm and try it, just to rule out any problems there.

Smtp: smtp.central.cox.net

Is this the ISP at the home location?
Is this the ISP at the office location?

Does the mailserver at smtp.central.cox.net require authentication/authorization? Possibly only recently turned it on?

I see you are collecting from a pop that's different from the sending smtp, so using the same credentials for both will not work.
