Greetings - Everyone!

Why, when you place the following URLs in your browser do you get PRs? I'm offering no prize for the correct answer. I'm just curious.

http://www.google.**.com/ = PR3
http://www.google.**/ = PR5
http://**google.org/ = PR5
http://**.google.com/ =PR5
http://*.google.com/ =PR2
http://**www.google.com/ =PR5
http://*www.google.com/ =PR4

Cheers!
Max

Hi,

I just Googled the following phrase:

inurl:iisadmpwd/

But my website did not show up...hmmm (just kidding)

Cheers!
Max

My best guess: there are links out there that match that pattern.

So someone has meant to link to some google search, but has got the link wrong.

The "*" signifying "anything", so http://http://www.google.com matches, and gives *that" page PR, even though it don' exist !

Thanks, AvgJoe, you've confirmed my suspicions.

The only one that still bugs me is:
http://www.google.**.com/ = PR3

Its like it could be any subdomain that mentions "google".

Cheers!

Try dmoz, yahoo, msn...
But probably you won't get this result **ing any small site:)

Just a guess, Max.

But it is fascinating that there seems to be PR for noexistent pages ... but it may only be a side-effect of the software behind the toolbar.

It deserves further research.

Maybe we could create nice contextual links for some nonexistent page, and see if it gets PR, and is searchable (a G B*mb of sorts) ... but then someone might create those pages and exploit it ...

Any suggestions for a test?

I get similar results for just about any large Site. Doesn't even have to be a Search Engine.
