View Full Version : More Evidence PR Doesn't Matter

Just a personal example of how Google Page Rank appears to not matter one bit.

A few weeks ago, several websites I created suddenly got their PR after waiting for a few months in limbo.

http://www.utahadvertisingagency.com
http://www.utahwebdesignfirms.com
http://www.webdevelopmentutah.com
http://www.webdesignersutah.com

However, while these sites do have PR, great keywords in the URLs, and I think they're set up in such a way as to get ranked fairly high, they're not...yet.

For example, if you search on Google for "utah web design firms" without quotes, www.utahwebdesignfirms.com doesn't come up anywhere, unless it's after the first 150 results (I didn't have the will to look any farther than that).

If you search with the quotes, then it does show up 18th, but still, based on the unique keywords and such you would probably expect it to come up higher.

There are sites with a lower or equal PR to www.utahwebdesignfirms.com that don't have the keywords and are not a homepage but are coming up much higher in the results, such as http://www.topdesignfirms.com/web-design-firms-utah-web-design-firm.php. I'm sure they have more backlinks, but if that's the case then it would appear PR doesn't have much to do with the number of backlinks you have.

So it appears to me that the PR seems to have little other significance other than to tell me that my site has been noticed by Google. Other than that, I'm paying attention to what really matters in Google--my ranking in search results for the keywords I want.

PR does matter, but its just one part of the rankng formula.

PR has some benefits, though ranking in the SERPs is not a major one.

That comes mostly from the relevance/topicality part of the link, usually link/alt text, but could include other link related stuff such as filenames and link title attributes.

BTW, not sure how wise interlinking all your sites is, particularly at this early stage....

One thing to remember though is that only Google knows what's really under the hood -- that is, what the true PR of a site is. I compare the PR on the toolbar as a 'need oil' light in a car. Don't depend on it, it's not reliable.
