I have been selling chotki (Eastern Catholic and Orthodox prayer ropes) online for almost a year now, and because there are so few chotki-makers I have always ranked in the top five for the search "chotki". A very high-ranking rosary maker just added chotki to their line, and they are ranking higher than I am on Google for the search "chotki". I have been bumped down to something like #8. How can I find out how they got such high rankings so fast? Is it because they were already ranked high on other searches such as "rosaries"?

There is no one correct answer for this. It is a multitude of things.
Relevant content - How large is your site? Do you optimize your pages per keyword? Do you have relevant content? Keyword density also plays a factor in this.
PR - Is theirs higher then yours? If they already rank high, then by adding more sections to their site, those new sections will also rank high (In most cases). Assuming of course they know what they are doing.
Incoming links - Do they have more? How many do you have? You can always have more. You mentioned google, if you are concerned about google then this should be your priority to getting higher ranking.
You stated this is not a competitive field, if that is the case you should be able to rank in the top 5 pretty easily.

Phantom is right. There is no one correct answer for this.
However, 99 percent of the time it's all due to links. Whoever has the best, quality, on-topic links wins.

That's my husband's site. But I'm his webmaster. LOL! I'm lucky to have this forum around! I always learn computer stuff by jumping in feet first and dogpaddling in circles for awhile. Then next thing I know I'm an expert!
