Link Exchanges for Craft Sites

Hi,
I am a newbie here- this is my first post. I have been reading with interest on the link exchange discussions. I am told that most crafters' sites should stay within the realm of other crafters in order to achieve decent standing. But I have been of the firm belief that if I see a site that I truly feel is worthwhile, such as some marketing sites etc., that I should have no problem linking to them. I think diversification would have a positive effect. Am I wrong?

My site has an entire section devoted to crafts, including several Directory categories and a couple of dozen craft related articles. I exchange links with other craft sites as well as most any quality site that fits my widely varied content. And it has all worked very well for my rankings and traffic.
