View Full Version : Christmas Giving = Instant Karma
Steven Glover

Following some requests I am posting this as a new topic.
The object here is to make someone else's Christmas a little better. Here is how it works. (The idea came from a local radio show "The Monsters of the Midday") What happens is that each year on this show they ask callers to call in and tell everyone what their Christmas wish is. As people make their wishes other callers will call in and offer to make that wish come true. The wish could be as simple as a new fishing rod to a wax figurine of Elvis.
We have already had one example where someone wanted a domain for Christmas. So the domain has been registered and now they have their Christmas wish. You can ask for anything (you won't necessarily get it), but you should ask. You would be surprised at what some of us may have in our garages. If no one asks this won't work. Keep in mind the type of forum this is. You may have more success asking for a logo redesign or help on a script vs. a submarine. :)
If everyone participates you will find that the giving can be much more fun than the receiving!

That seems like an easy one. :) Their are a lot of PHP/MYSQL people that visit here.
SO any takers out there? Who is a good tutor?
I wish I could help you personally, Matauri, but being a PHP newbie myself, it would be the blind the slightly blinder.
This place is a good place to start (failing someone - like Cyanide? - stepping in to offer tutoring) http://www.php.net/
They have some interesting links to resources and tutorial sites.
Good luck and again, sorry I couldn't help you myself!

Who knows maybe we will get this thread in the newsletter. :)
I just thought of it. Thats my Christmas wish! That WebProWorld will list everyone that granted a wish on the newsletter this year at Christmas time. If webproworld is feeling really giving this year they could list that persons web page url to inspire extra "giving" incentive!

site is running: Linux on Apache/1.3.26 (Unix), last updated- 18-Nov-2003 for 65.18.201.5 .
I think that this is right on janeth's script "#!/usr/bin/perl", meaning the path at top of .cgi , but;
I think she has wrong path to sendmail program, or has her permissions ser wrong ie- not '755' or whatever.
I am only used to Win2k IIS, so I'm not familiar with linux exactly.
Here is a page with instructions for installing a perl script ; http://www.pageresource.com/cgirec/ptut2.htm
and I have a mail script that uses a .pm module that doesn't rely on the 'sendmail'.
Also,

Telnet/cgi-bin>chmod 755 filename.cgi
I have a whole folder on my desktop full of research I did, janeth!
Here is the other script:http://www.tneoh.zoneit.com/perl/SendMail/
Also, I wonderred if you made sure to ftp in ASCII mode, as binary with not do it properly.
Please let me know, janeth.
Okay greyhawk, race is on! I do not mean to interfere with you, and I would never - whether your next premier or not - but all this I did last week so want to put it to use!
Anyways, one(greyhawk) and a half(mikmik lol) heads are better than one!

Here is an example of troubleshooting errors on a 'Linux' server (EXAMPLE ONLY)
Internal Server 500 errors, help!
Here are a few common problems that can occur when working with CGI-scripts, and how to fix them:
Make sure your path to perl is: #!/usr/bin/perl
Be sure to upload your script as ASCII (text). Most FTP programs will do this automatically, but be sure to double-check this.
Make sure your /cgi-bin, and any sub-folders in your /cgi-bin, and your scripts themselves are set to 755 permissions. If you set it to 777 permissions, none of your scripts in it will work.
4) CGI-scripts can only be run from the cgi-bin and sub-folders of it (chmod these sub-folders to 755 also). Make sure you are uploading to the CGI-BIN and not your HTML folder.
Paths aren't always easy. For ensim servers the path is:
/home/virtual/domain.com/var/www/html
and
/home/virtual/domain.com/var/www/cgi-bin
where for our Cpanel servers the paths are:
/home/username/public_html
and
/home/username/public_html/cgi-bin
Cpanel also has an error_log feature in the control panel that lets you see the last few lines of your site's error_log. This may prove helpful in fixing errors in your script.
If nothing else works, upload the files again
That's all for now!

I don't have anything to ask for, but I do have something that I want to give: a big thank you to everyone on this board.
Thanks for appreciating my help when I was able to give it (not very often).
And thanks for generously and graciously offering help when I needed it!
Wait, I do have a wish after all: That everyone involved with WebProWorld and their loved ones will have a happy and safe holiday season and a prosperous new year.
We all come to this wonderful site for pretty much the same reasons, but we need to remember that there are things more important than websites, business, and money. And since this forum (for the most part) lacks the animosity witnessed elsewhere, I think that base is pretty well covered.

I have a wish and to be fair it's a big one, so here goes.
I just found out that my beautiful girlfriend (whom I love & cherish dearly) is expecting my child and I am over the moon. The worry is my girlfriend has a kind of epilepsy and the medication she has to take for it means that there is a strong possibility of complications with the birth. We won't know full the situation until the scans on week 12 (which will be just before Christmas) so until then we are both in the dark and not knowing what to expect, waiting is allways the worst.
So I'm going to wish this goes well and in 9 months I'll be a dad. I know there isn't a thing any of you can do about this, as i mentioned before, this is a waiting game, but if all you reading this could keep your fingers crossed for me I'd be very gratefull.

I have a wish!!! It's a crazy one though and one I'm sure can't be granted, but at least I can share it!
Five years ago this week my 4 year old son was granted a Make-A-Wish to visit DisneyWorld (more specifically, he wanted to give Winnie-The-Pooh and Barney hugs). We celebrated his 4th birthday having lunch in Cinderella's castle and I promised him a return trip when/if he reached 5 years of remission. Seeing as he had a very rare form of cancer twice by the age of 2-1/2 we never really thought we'd get to that 5 years of remission. But here we are! He just celebrated his 9th birthday and keeps asking me about going back to DisneyWorld! Yikes! We are flat broke so it's not going to happen! I feel bad for making a promise that I couldn't keep, but I am soooooo grateful that he is still here with us!
BTW...when my son was on treatment, we had some people who adopted our family for Christmas and actually had someone dress up as Santa and come to our house with tons of presents! Wishes definitely can come true and there is definitely a Santa Claus!
Thanks for letting me share! I hope everyone has a great Christmas! It's my favorite time of the year!

OK...how about a more realistic wish? My website used to be in the top three in Google under Seattle Wedding Video and #1 for Tacoma Wedding Video. Now I can't even find us anymore! My sister re-did our website and totally changed all our meta tags. I am also having a problem with some of my competitors stealing my old meta tags. So I took the old meta tags and encrypted them with an online utility...is that a good thing to do? Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated! We used to have such a great internet presence and now we don't...I HAVE to get back up there...our business depends on it!

Greyhawk,
I thought I posted but maybe I did't. Or it got deleted? (did I break a rule??)
Anyway, I think that is an awesome idea! My son's name is Matthew Randall and he has a webpage we created many years ago at:
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Garden/5195/Matthew.html
Check out his cute pictures! Actually...there are some with Santa when he came to our house and of his Make-A-Wish trip! I haven't updated it in two years but maybe this is some motivation to do so! I know telling his story has helped many other families realize there is light at the end of that dark, long tunnel.
Thanks for thinking of him!

Hi Laura,
I just took a quick look at your site. It's attractive and I like the style.
I'm assuming you did the encryption fairly recently so you probably haven't done serious harm to your rankings. But you should remove the encryption as soon as possible. You may be protecting yourself from your competitors in terms of them stealing your keywords, but I think you're handing them the game by rendering your page impossible for search engines to rank and index.
You're in pretty good shape with your page rank for google, which is a respectable 4/10, but you should work to improve that by developing more backlinks with related sites.
I didn't have time to delve too deeply into your site's pages, but the ones that I saw without encryption seem to have a good mix of keywords. So it seems you already have your keyword selection developed. Now you have to tighten up your use of keywords.
Select a handful to focus on per page and make sure they're consistently used in <title> <keywords> <description> <H> and <A> tags as well as sprinkled throughout the body text. Right now you've got keywords that are in your descriptions, but not in your title, vice versa and so on for all of the above tags.
Choose the words to focus on per page and then put them into ALL of those tags... trying to find a different keyword mix on each page that works well with the natural content of the page.
I just had a quick look, so there's probably more advice to be had. But you should look at correcting the encryption and non-concurrence of your keywords as soon as possible.
hope this helps. If I could, I'd send you and your family to DisneyWorld :)
cheers,
jade

What a wonderful thing you are doing here! My wish is for my chemo kids at Seattle Children's Hospital. My company, Cancer Comfort, is donating 30 gifts of comfort to children with cancer, as a gift from 12-year old cancer patient, Sarah.
We are hosting a fundraising event and have raised 75% of the funds needed. My wish is that everyone who reads this post will consider donating $1.00 or more to help us provide comfort for these kids as well as gifts for the caregiver. And if it's not asking too much, perhaps you could share the link with others to let them know about "Sarah's Gift". http://www.cancercomfort.net/cancercomfort/id104.html
Maybe I can help grant someone's wish. I'm raffling tickets for 6 weeks of personal wellness coaching ($200 value) or a Feng Shui Floor Plan Assessment (value $149.95) for $5.00 each. The sale is limited to 100 tickets per service, so your chances of winning are pretty good :) You can purchase as many tickets as you'd like and can transfer the prize to someone else. All proceeds are being donated to "Sarah's Gift". For details visit: http://www.ryze.com/go/earthmom
Thanks so much for your time and I wish everyone abundant success!
Many Blessings,

Steven, thanks for giving us this beautiful idea!
Mistasix -- I'll be glad to give your girlfriend Reiki; it's a simple way of connecting to the Source of all energy, and of using universal energy to bring harmony and health. It can neutralize the harmful effects of medicines and be greatly beneficial -- physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually -- for both your girlfriend and the baby. Reiki always works for the greatest good. It can never do harm (it's much more intelligent than our brains).
If your girlfriend is willing to spend 15-20 minutes just being relaxed and meditative, I'll do Reiki with her once a week. (I do this every day, with people all over the world.) Even better, if she would like, I can also teach her to give Reiki to herself; then she can do it whenever she likes.
If she's willing to consider this, she may want to look at my website for more information. I suggest the "Great Things About Reiki & Johrei" page, and the "JOH-REI-KI" page (for a history of Reiki and how it works).
Happy Holidays! ------

Everyone. I decided it was going to been impossible to keep up with the list of wishes that have been granted so I made a quick little form. http://www.liquidfusion.ws/wishes.cfm I know its cheezy with no graphics but what the heck. Anyway if you post a wish and someone grants please fill in the little form. Also you can do a quick spot check to see if someones wish has already been filled and by who by looking at the form. I think I added everyone so far but you guys should double check me.
Lets see if we can mae this the longest list on the net! We can show the world just how much spirit we have here a WebProWorld!

I wish for databases for charity web sites.
I have several charities that I volunteer for that have sites that could use a database. Like a huge collection of free crafting patterns (http://www.tlcforangels.com/patterns.html, also on a couple of other sites), or a national list of advocates and attorneys (http://www.education-a-must.com/aalist.html, they have another list too). These things are such a pain to keep updated with HTML, and really should be more versatile and searchable. But these charities don't have the money for fancy hosting (or even paid hosting of any kind), let alone database supporting accounts. Most use Tripod, which doesn't support cgi, let alone offer databases. I want to be able to create databases for them without them having to pay or move their sites. Any thoughts? Anyone have some alternative solution?
And of course I have no experience with creating, hosting, or maintaining databases, so I need help with that too. I might even be asking for the wrong thing.
This forum is a great idea.

Steven,
This is a wonderfully unselfish thread you got going here! Thanks for starting it.
I've got wishes but nothing anyone here can do anything about.
My main wish is that I will be able to make enough revenue from my site in the next year that I can devote all my time to it and quit my day job.
But .... on a more realistic note ;o) My wish is that I had a tutor who could help me figure out how to set up XML on my site so I can do datafeeds.
And my other wish has already been granted: A unique, helpful community of like-minded individuals who are willing to share their talents .... as in WebProWorld!

Thaks to all of you with your fingers crossed for me, it means a great deal to me that others are putting kind thoughts out there for my girlfriend and I at this time, that really is instant karma. Also I'd like to say a big thanks to Steven Glover for putting this post up, I guess when you have something on your mind it is allways good to talk (or in this case, type) & get things your chest.
When I find out exactly what's going on I'll put a post up in the break room. Thanks again for your thoughts and kind comments, you are all very nice people and I'm proud to be part of this global forum.
Tim,
I wish you and your girlfriend the very best. I'm adding you to our "Reflections" list at work. I work in a residential facility with recovering people and we have a "Daily Reflections" mediatation period once a day when we all reflect on special needs and requests.
Sending you both positive thoughts.

I took a stab at a Loving Hands Boutique logo and sent Sue a sample in a private message. Hopefully she likes it, but it's a quickie so she might be holding out for something spectacular. :)
Melissa,
Thank you and I would love to see the logo you made, but I never received the private message.

Sounds like one of those email spam headings. But this is a serious request.
My fiance (Leon Leonard Jones Jr. - THE ART MAN) is an artist and we've been selling 16x20 and 24x30 "photo prints" off our website for a little over a year now. Last week, the guy that does our printing told us he is going out of business and giving up the lease on his digital printer.
I've spent the past week calling every number in the yellow pages and searching online for quotes on printing and all I can say is I know why our printer went out of business. $5 per square foot is the average quote I've been given for digital or "plotter" type printing whereas he was only charging us $5-$8 PER IMAGE!
We've often considered going offset printing with our top sellers, but the initial investment is far beyond our means.
Unless we find a solution quickly, I'll have to take our store down. I already have orders that can't be filled and unless they agree to backordering their images, I'll start issuing refunds and apologies once I'm unable to meet our "shipped within 5 business days" policy. We also have a couple of customers purchasing wholesale from us who are clamoring for more with Xmas coming up and all.
You can view Leon's work at www.theartman.com.
Thanx to all that make this whole forum such an informative and interesting place to be!

Everything is doing well. People are getting their wishes.
Who else has a wish?
Even if you don't celebrate Christmas you can still make a wish.
OK, everybody, now hear this ...
My wish for a logo has been answered in quadruple by Mistasix, for which I am more than grateful, as the logos are beautiful, bellisimos!!
Thanks to all of you, and yes, Steven, chalk this up as another wish come true.
With all my heart,

Oh but you will. Father time will be just about turning the bend, when the curtains go up on our new addition.
Will post the result in the future thread "And what did Santa leave under your tree?"

So no other wishes? It's easy to make a wish. For instance I might wish for an alienware laptop because they rock! Of course if you want to actually get a wish fulfilled you should ask for something realistic.
Perhaps someone needs a website tune up or something. Maybe a custom web app. I personally might need some serious mental therapy. (No need to volunteer Minstrel that was a joke. Is it true that people often make jokes about things that are true about themselves?)
We should set a goal. 25, 50, maybe even a 100 wishes filled by Christmas? What do you guys think?
In a lighter vein (the I-bet-Santa-can't-fit-this-in-his-sleigh variety), I wish:
the real cat in the hat would visit my house
Dr. Seuss could come back to write just one more book
I had a girlfriend to spend christmas with, i.e. roasting chestnuts, rum 'n eggnog and miscellaneous mistletoe related activities
<sigh>
at least I've got my two front teeth
Well, Jade, still having two front teeth may just be part of the problem - it displays an unwillingness to learn to dance! :-)
Thing One and Thing Two - :-)
I've scoured my house
But it would appear that a mouse
While cunning and cute
has made off with my copy
- straight up the chute!
I DO own a copy of Cat in The Hat -
but it's nowhere to be found
and that is That!
:-)
See? Santa can fit that in his sleigh!
And he'll bring it to you - today!
Hahahaha... well, I'm no Dr Seuss after all.
Well, I'd like to find a way to exchange links with you. It would seem though that we offer much of the same... is there a way to help each other without losing clients to each other? I kid, of course. All of my work has been word of mouth and I only recently put up an actual site. A week ago (must have been during Google's database update!!) I suddenly popped up for a whole day in the top spot for "custom web design bc" ... but it was fleeting success. Still at the top spot for my geographic location though! (Sunshine Coast, BC)
Let me know your thoughts - and have a very Merry Christmas! :-)

Hi folks, Brian here. I'm new to registering here in the forums, but have been receiving the newsletters and browsing the forums for some time now.
I'm an armature web designer with a lot of energy to put into the sites I web master for, and I'm somewhat of a Photo shop Addict (terminal I'm afraid).
My sites look amateurish I think, one of which I made and manage for work: http://www.rcrmuseum.ca
Another I took over and redesigned for a non-profit organization that I do in my spare time. http://www.execulink.com/~thercran/
and two others I redesigned and manage for a small fee http://www.mfrc-london.org/ and http://www.afp-aac.org/
My real strength lays in Photo shop, though I spend all of my time away from work, working on updating my web sites and learning more about Front Page. I even went so far as to pick up the 2003 version for about $300 Canadian a couple weeks ago.
Work decided to get a professional web design company to redo the http://www.rcrmuseum.ca site (which should be up and running by the 28th of November we hope), and the nice part is that I'm working with the designer who's teaching me how to use Fireworks and Dream weaver, and web design techniques and flow charting. I really like those programs and am picking them up amazingly fast, even for my expectations.
There's where my addition to the Wish list, if I should even be considered with such a short time here (this being my first post).
I've downloaded the trial versions of Fireworks and Dream weaver, but inevitably they are going to run out before the end of December. I prefer them over the Front Page software, but can't afford to go into hawk any further by buying them. Pirating for me is out of the question.
What I'm wishing for is anyone who might have picked up newer versions to toss the old ones my way in so that I might have a licensed product to work and learn with.
A secondary wish is to figure out how to get my photo to the left of this forum like everyone else. :)
Fingers Crossed.

Can't help you with the software Brian, but if you'll look in the navigation bar at the left side of the page here, you will find a link for Member Photos, simply paste your picture therein and the Supreme Beings here at WPW will process it for you. Before you know it, (well... maybe like about Monday or Tuesday), your smiling face will be beside every post past, present, and in the future.
Then you can go up to "Edit Profile" way up top there on the Blue navigation bar, and enter something whismical at the "Signature" slot, or plug your Website address in it, or what ever you might like on the bottom of every post.
Good to have you aboard. Stop in and visit us at the Today's Tomorrow's Yesterday, or what ever that thread is that we've been held captive in, it appears you'll fit right in Dude! }:~)

Ya know Rocky, you missed the obvious reason why us Canadian males seem to have a disproportionate number of cranial-teeth wounds - JMac even referenced it earlier in this thread.
It's a little known Canadian mating ritual where the female expects the male to "put out his teeth" on the head of a rival suitor. It's a variation on the alpha male thing. It makes for very colourful and entertaining town dances.

Just correcting your post a bit, SB - east of the Rockies this is pretty much an unknown injury and certainly not part of any courtship or mating ritual I've ever observed in Ontario or Quebec... (and when I lived in B.C., although I think I was probably interested in courtship and mating, I was too young to have any idea what I was doing)...

Have you seen the women in Ontario and Quebec? Now compare them to the beautiful women we have here on the west (read best) coast it is no wonder we are willing take our own teeth out. The only good thing that Ontario has going for it is the Toronto Maple Leafs and Quebec should be very thankful for the comedy festival. LOL

I'm not sure, but it could be a 'breakaway' Hutterite sect.
The prophet could be named 'HAL' or 'Robby'. Or 'Asimov XII'.
I'm also thinking thoughts of Mike Meyers on 'Saturday Night Live' in that -German with the monkey- series of skits.

Hi Folks,
Brian here. I couldn't beleive it, having been SPAM free for almost two years, I joined this forum and in less than a couple hours had been searched out by a SPAM-BOT or otherwise added to the "*****/Viagra/Give Me you Bank Info and I'll Deposit $Million from deposed dictator", emails that made me shut down my hotmail account.
Slap me silly for assuming that a site that offers solutions to so many people, might incorporate an anti spam formula into the script to prevent this sort of thing.
It's liekly too late for me now, but I've added a "REMOVE.THIS.SPAM.BLOCKER.TEXT." to my account email address, which likely means, if automated, I won't be getting any forwarded messages from here unless I go directly to the Forum and check for new entries. I Like it that way anyhow, I'm more likely to reply when I'm in the here and now. :)
Well, for anyone who builds their own sites, and doesn't already use an Anti Spam script, here's one for you:
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="Javascript">
// Change User Name and Domain Name
username="yourname"
at="@"
domainname="emailserver.com"
document.write(""+username+""+at+""+domainname+" ('"+username+""+at+""+domainname+"')")
</script>
Merry X-Mas, my gift to all :)
Cheers!
Brian.
P.S. Any comments on my Altered (Self) portrait?

MikMik, after reading the forum on Logos, this probably isn't anything like what you're looking for, but what the heck, the critics are slamming "The Cat In The Hat", but the only reason it's doing so well is because "Kids" don't care what the critics say. :)
If you want to use or alter it, the PSD file is also there, just click http://www3.sympatico.ca/thercr/HAL.zip to download it. It's not really a zip file, just change the extension to PSD and it should open up in photo shop just fine.

Let's just pretend I had formally made that wish so they can get what they deserve...Instant Karma!
I don't want to leave out the others who helped me out...spiderbait, coolo_chris, grease, cyanide

Thanks all! May Santa bring you lots of cookies and put a little extra rum in your egg nog.

Hi pmrusselll893.
I'm not an SEO expert, but I do have a few ideas that might help you out some. It's going to take a fair bit of work on your part, though, and may require some serious changes to your website. Here goes:
You've got a lot of spaces, returns and blank lines where they're not needed. Get rid of 'em. While they're making it easier for you to update your website, they're making it very hard for the search engines' spiders to get what they to help your site rise to the top. All those extra spaces are doing is pushing all your important keywords farther and farther down the page. Make 'em go away!
Also, you've got lots of javascript all over your site. Search engines can't read or use anything that's contained in a javascript yet. Result? All your text, links and graphic images that are inside javascripts are totally useless to them. I'd suggest finding another way to implement your rollovers, or at least provide some <NOSCRIPT> tags throughout your site so the search engines have something to grab onto.
Next is your images. They should all have ALT tags that describe your images. Not all the search engines pay attention to them anymore, but for those that do, it'll give your site a big boost.
And all those META TAGS in your <HEAD> tag? There are waaaaay too many. Again, they're just pushing the important information on your website down on your page, making it harder for the search engines to find you. Most search engines don't even look at those tags anymore. If you're going to keep any at all, I would suggest keeping the TITLE, KEYWORDS, and DESCRIPTION. AUTHOR, REPLY-TO, REVISIT, etc. are totally useless in terms of improving your standing in the search engines.
I know this isn't much advice, but it should be enough to help you get started and increase your rankings at least a little.
Best of luck to you and I hope this helps! :)

Page Writer =
MikMik, after reading the forum on Logos, this probably isn't anything like what you're looking for, but what the heck, the critics are slamming "The Cat In The Hat", but the only reason it's doing so well is because "Kids" don't care what the critics say. :)
If you want to use or alter it, the PSD file is also there, just click http://www3.sympatico.ca/thercr/HAL.zip to download it. It's not really a zip file, just change the extension to PSD and it should open up in photo shop just fine.
Cheers!

That is good!! Tech and creepy! I downloaded the file, I'll have to put Photoshop back on my machine, learning Fireworks myself right now.
I didn't mean to give the wrong impression, it is Steve Glover who is doing the site, but I was overcome with enthusiasm when I made my earlier post, and obviously he liked the logo to!

I actually recieved a number of samples from Tim. He rocks! However anyone else that has started anything I would love to see them. I am sure in some form or another they can be incorporated. I really appreciate everyones effort on making my wish come true!
So having said that are there any other wishes that we can make come true? Perhaps people can make a wish for others that are not in here. How about that. Receiving a gift from someone you don't know on behalf of someone else. Talk about some good Karma!

Hi Computers:
Regarding your comments about losing a good position in Google, I have only today discovered the same thing with two of my keywords. I got this info in one of my newsletters that may explain what is happening with them:
"This is far more than a Google Dance.
It's a wholesale zapping of commercial web sites, probably
using the dictionary system that you mentioned.
When I search for the phrases that used to find my clients, I
now only find big company sites, .gov's, .org's, .ac's,
directories and shopping sites.
I have clients' sites that were sitting nicely at the top
of Google a week ago, and now they're nowhere to be seen.
Google has missed the odd word from its dictionary (I won't say
which because they will just zap my clients' sites for those words
also).
My clients are already talking of laying off staff. About half a
dozen of their sites have been taken off Google (and they are all
for different subjects, not mirrors of each other). How can a company
survive when its main route for traffic is suddenly cut off.
This all happened without notice. And they won't answer my emails.
I urge everyone affected to complain most strongly to Google.
if they keep to their new policy, they will be a shadow of themselves
in a year's time, but we'll all be out of business by then."
This was posted by Rob and will likely affect all of us.
Regards,
Leisa

Much better mate!
Uhhhh...... Yup! Front Page will do that to you every once in a while! Usually when you least expect it, bang a page up in a hurry thinking it's good to go, and run off without checking it! Lesson one in working with Front Page.... Always make sure your page is there, and all the reference links work! }:^b
Been there, and done that more than once!!!
Not sure why it does it, but sometimes it simply refuses to trim the C:\\ file status on upload.
You might want to put an e-mail link down on the bottom of the page someplace, also. Granted you have it in the message, but whenever I moved off the button to see if the e-mail address was linked, I lost that page immediately. Thus it's not a click and blast off a message affair, which you might want it to be! If someone is going to be that generous, you want to make their being so, as painless as possible.
Best of Luck,
Rocky

Well I have debated about asking for anything for a while but everything I have come up with has either been silly, impractical or usually beyond the reach of the forum.
I am helping a friend turn his book into an e-book as some of you will know from my cries for help in other threads. (I suppose as I'm giving my time converting and compling for free it is my christmas gift to him - mind you I'd be better giving him a copy of MS Word then I wouldn't have to go mad at the .wps files he keeps sending me).
However the one thing I am not very good at (confirmed by several of my attempts so far) is graphics. I'm trying to do a 3D book cover for him for the website (usual thing like most people have for e-books as a promo and as a link). Any of you graphic gods-ess' that are in a christmas spirt fancy knocking something up for me?
The title of the book is "Facts and myths in hypnotherapy - by Dr John Plowman" Its a book about hypnotherapy techniques, practicle usage and stuff like giving up smoking, curing anixety and Past Life Regression. Target market is normal people who want to understand more about hypnotherapy.

I'll leave the logo/banner request to someone with some artistic talent but let me offer some comments about the SEO issue.
1. Step one is to do some re-design on your home page. I really don't mean to be offensive but it won't help you to draw visitors to your site if they are given the impression of an unprofessional business. My two first impressions of your page were (a) the formatting and layout are all helter skelter, hodge-podge... it's almost uncomfortable in the tension it creates... it needs simplification and order; and (b) it is way too long: break it up into a main page with links to separate pages for the individual properties, leaving just a description (and none of the large photographs) on the main page.
2. your title tag needs work:
<title>Nelson, B.C. Private Family Home for house exchange or short term rentals.</title>The key question here is: what words and phrases will people enter into a search box who want to find your site? I agree in your case "Nelson, B.C." should be there, but at the end, not the beginning, of your title tag. Try this:
<title>House exchanges, short term rentals, Nelson, B.C., Canada</title>
3. your keywords tag:
<meta name="keywords" content="vacation rental,nelson,bc,british columbia,kootenay,house,holiday,lodging,accommodat ion">
For search engines still using this meta tag, you are telling them that you want people searching for "nelson", "bc", "holiday", accomodation" to be pointed to your site. That isn't what people who are likely to want to know about your business are going to search for - try something like this:
<meta name="keywords" content="vacation house rental, holiday house rental, vacation accomodation, accomodation exchange, housing exchange, lodging, british columbia">
with additional PHRASES added that seem appropriate - but think in terms of phrases as well as words.
4. your description tag:
<meta name="description" content="Nelson, British Columbia (BC) Canada and Kootenay Lake. We offer vacation rental by owner. Nelson lodging of all types: House rental, beach house, cottage, cabin, and suite">
Again, it's not clear how many search engines still pay attention to this tag but you might want to at least make sure it is friendly to any that might - see above comments for title and keywords.
5. your content:
Nelson, British Columbia (BC) Canada and Kootenay Lake. We offer vacation rental by owner. Nelson lodging of all types: House rental, beach house, cottage, cabin, and suite.
Again, see comments above - apart from the formatting issues, you need to expand the description of your services - give the search engine spiders something to read that will highlight your website in the listings and give people searching for services similar to what you offer a reason to click on the link to your site instead of all the others that may come up.
Try doing a search on Google, MSN, Alta Vista, etc., for relevant keywords and phrases and then look at the sites that come up. In Internet Explorer, click on View | Source and have a peek at what the more successful sites are doing in terms of their title tags and other meta tags, and in terms of the content of their home/main page. Take your direction from them...

As the old saying goes ~ "Give a man a fish and he'll have supper. Teach a man to fish and he'll never go hungry."
Since you infer that you aren't lazy, you simply lack knowledge and want to learn, gift of SEO Tool link would be very befitting. SEO is a challenge no doubt Kyle, but it can be learned, and if you view it as a challenge, and try your best; it is a very rewarding experience to make it to the top. Don't get too spun up in it though because Google can crush you with the simple change of an algorithm!
To grant your wish however, I'm going to give you two links and bit of simple advice for Christmas!
The first link is to an on-line SEO Tool - it works wonders - it's hands down the sweetest tool I've ever found for increasing your search engine performance. Knowledgeable or not, you can improve your site's search engine performance with this tool. http://www.instantposition.com/seo_doctor.cfm
But, before you ever start there..... you need to go to http://www.webceo.com/download/ and download the Web CEO 4.0 program. It all looks pretty complex when you open it, and there are a great many features therein that you may or may not want to play with, but you'll want to go over to "Features", then down to "Ranking" and set up your website's profile, to see where you're at now, and track how your performance improves over time. The program allows you to track your site's performance on about 20 search engines with the click of one button, once your profile is set up. It'll show you current ranking, last ranking, best ranking and change in position. It'll also show you how many pages your competing against for that keyword, and where your competitors are if you load them to the competitors profile.
The last bit of your wish granted... pay heed to the wisdom Minstrel offered above. He raised some very sound points. I would also suggest you go to Google and do a search for your primary Keywords, whatever they might be. What the engine finds is what you are competing against. When the results come up, click on the "cache" link beneath the top finds for your keywords. This will offer you a cached file of websites you're competing against, with the keywords you used highlighted in the text body. That's what you're up against; that's what you have to beat! Next open the site, and view the source, see what they're doing for meta tags, title, keywords, and description. You're also competing against that. You have to improve upon what they have, to beat them on the search engines. At times it's difficult if not impossible, you may have to select different keywords; find a small niche that works to your advantage and generates traffic if necessary. (i.e. On my site with "fishing" as a primary keyword, I'm competing against 22.7 million pages for that keyword, All the Web, it's over 28.5 million! "ND Fishing" however All the Web shows only 1.2 million, and Google is only 447,000! I've got way better odds, with the addition of "ND" don't you think? I did anyhow, and although I may never see rank for "fishing", I've managed to pull off a #6 ranking on Google for "ND Fishing.")
Between the three, I guarantee you, you can increase performance of the site. Aside from that, study everything you can find on Search Engines, and when you get done reading everything there is out there to read, you'll probably know as little about them as all the rest of us. };^)
Best of luck, and Merry Christmas! If you have any questions on the links give me a shout.

Thank you both for the help, I also heard that if your keywords and between about 10-30 percent of the content changes each time the search engine re-indexes your site it will bring you to a better placing.. true or false?
If there is any good tutorials or articles on SEO please post them.
Thanks,

I honestly couldn't tell you Kyle! I'm eternally seeking #1 for every keyword I've got, so my homepage is constantly changing trying to pick up rank. It hasn't sat still for more than 2 - 3 weeks since I got serious about making it #1 in August.
As for the keyword "fishing" I still haven't found it on my homepage! I linked the homepage to the links page, and likewise loaded a ton of reciprocal links to that page, through those two moves, my links page got spidered. It hit #12 on Google in the last shake up without Keywords, without Description, without any Meta Tags, without, without, without, I'm talking, even the title was wrong! I forgot to change the title from "CSS Template." When it was found however, I capitalized on that, and immediately optimized everything on the page for rank. I have a 14 day revisit meta tag for the robots on the site, and after two weeks it shot straight to #6.
There's a whole lot to gaining rank on the engines Kyle, and the best advice I can give you, is never stand still. You must always make an attempt to improve things. Whoever suggested the 10 - 30% change, is probably changing that much just trying to stay on top the game, and that's what makes the difference, always trying to be the best!

I have a wish.
I need to learn about mod_rewrite for rewriting urls for search engine optimization on a php site. I've searched the search engines and looked at pages and pages of reference on-line, BUT I think I need a mod_rewrite for dummies reference. The pages online are starting to look familiar, but there is that first step that is not explained on a simple enough level for me. "If you have a page.php that received queries x, y and z, this is how you want to code the mod_rewrite." I'm worried about getting it half right and crashing the server. Can anyone recommend a very basic step-by-step reference for putting up an .htaccess file on an apache server utilizing mod_rewrite?
Thank you!!

Hey everyone...
As a bit of good news I just thought I'd offer an update on one of my own wish requests.
While the wish wasn't specifically granted by anyone here at wpw, I certainly did receive some positive and encouraging support.
So, the good news is that I have a new girlfriend!!! It's funny since I wasn't really seriously looking and had only posted that request as a joke, but I guess somehow I turned on my "availability radar" and the next thing I knew I was being approached by a beautiful and dynamic young lady following a presentation I'd given to a number of local businesses... and it's been beautiful and loving history ever since :-)
With results like this, do I dare reiterate that I wish Dr. Seuss would come back to write another book? Maybe not or it might be granted a la Stephen King's "Pet Semetary" ... so I think I'll just settle for my other wish to have the Cat in the Hat visit my house ... while my mother is out, obviously.
cheers everyone, and happy holidays.

Hello Folks,
Last October at our companies Halloween party I received my first pink slip ending a 3 year employment with a international web development & marketing firm. In Late January I was picked up by a startup with big dreams and some promise. Come October I received my 2nd pink slip as the company closed its doors. Here I sit unemployed for the 2nd Christmas in a row. If their is a Santa out there somewhere and he needs web development, web marketing, or even a marketing assistant please have him look at:
http://www.bfoleyinteractive.com/
It would make my families christmas that much better knowing I will have a job come next year. I just want to give my 3 year old daughter Alexandria a real christmas for once and my streak of bad luck in October seems to be becoming a yearly tradition.
I am a very devoted and hard working individual that just wants to give everything he is to one company on a full time basis. I am currently located in the Silicon Valley, Ca and would need to telecommute if the position is not near San Jose or the peninsula. Thanks for listening & Merry Christmas, Feliz Navidad, Nollaig Shona.

So, I don't think I'll be bringing her here in the near future. Besides she's a video/film producer so she doesn't really have much interest in the whole web development thing.
However, as soon as we have our first photo together I'll be sure to post it here and keep the "family" in the loop about the newest addition.

While the wish wasn't specifically granted by anyone here at wpw, I certainly did receive some positive and encouraging support.
So, the good news is that I have a new girlfriend!!! Here goes my wish:
If I had the power to change values, I probably wouldn’t even dare to do so, cause still uncertain of defining values.
After all these years, I have seen those changes in me being control by nature herself. Thus, I no longer know where I lay within the boundaries this nature I see within my soul.
I watched myself aging with hopes and dreams. Puzzling around broken pieces of choice and when the set is complete and the form has shaped, now begin to wonder of a dream falling into a drop of water.
Now I feel that my time is about to be over and a vision forever to be left behind incomplete. So, I raise my hands and ask the man above as to why I’m breaking down in silent pieces:
God, give me the courage to steal your passion. So I could heal these broken hearts.
God, embrace me with the chance for you to close your eyes and let me now for a second in time touch those starving families, those children who lost their parents and all the ones who have been left behind or forgotten.
God rest yourself, so I can take upon the system of your justice. Not to alter it but to deliver it to us who need to believe in true freedom and a justice we have tried to blindly follow in a mimic of your testimony of faith.
The answer has always been in nature regardless of what, a question as warm as the summer and an answer as cold as the winter. How naďve of me to keep asking questions over and over again! So I say after Will Young’s song:
I think I'd better leave right now
Before I fall any deeper
I think I'd better leave right now
Feeling weaker and weaker
Somebody better show me how
Before I fall any deeper
I think I'd better leave right now
Finally, my wish is your wishes come true.
Best wishes,
Kiumars

Wish I could help you, ofoglada, but unfortunately I can't. The year before last, my husband was laid off just before Christmas, so that was a rough year for us. Now, I'm only just getting started in a brand new area. We just moved to Wisconsin in June after my husband was laid off in May. Since we're both self-employed at the moment, Christmas is going to be tight for us as well.
If I hear anything about jobs in your area and/or your line of work, I'll be sure to refer them to you! Otherwise, the best I can offer you are a few prayers to the Almighty in your direction. Maybe that'll help! :)
I wish you and your family the best of luck for the coming New Year! May it be prosperous and see you fully-employed for Christmas 2004!

Okay everyone, its been a while since I have been on here...but here goes.
A Christmas wish,
for you and for me.
From us to the world,
the world to each person.
That each of us understand,
we are as one, as we are all the same.
Flesh and blood,
mind and spirit.
That the day will come,
when we embrace life itself.
Each day growing,
each day learning.
To accept each other,
To teach each other,
To love each other,
and the world.
Touch someone's heart,
touch someone's soul.
Bring a smile to their face,
and a smile from within yourself.
Therein may you find,
the warmth of the world,
the love of the world,
and true happiness.
May everyone have a very Merry Christmas,
a very fruitful and Happy New Year!

My wish is for ambition, happiness and excitment again. Seem to just go through the motions these days with a lack of any desire. To re-organize also. So, that is my little wish(es).
Oh and for once I would like to enjoy a birthday!

First off, welcome to the forum! I haven't 'met' you but I'm looking forward to your participation.
I go through all kinds of ups and downs lately and seem to get excited about stuff but it only lasts for a short time, so I hear you loud and clear.
It is just one of those things we go through, and stuff always seem to resolve itself, eventually. I've found that sometimes I have to 'let go' and try not to force it to happen, or the lack of 'whatever', ambition and excitement in this case, will just solidify!
I usually have to look at other area's of my life to see what is missing, and when I am feeling balanced and content overall (exercise, diet, sleep, family, friends, spiritual, hobbies) my enthusiasm for work and learning returns.
This is a great place for feedback, lots of 'smarts' and support around here, and it is nice not to feel alone, to know us/we(?) others face the same battles, and most important, find solutions.
Most of all, good to meet you!

My wish is for donations to be made to the " FEED THE CHILDREN FUND " Most americans are not aware that third world contries are not the only ones who have starving children, Feed The Children focuses on the children of the U.S.A. Due to a high unemployment rate , Children in the U.S.A are starving . Food has been donated to this cause although the problem lies in the need for funds to ship and distribute the food to the children in need. I am barely able to sqeak out a living in the ticket business due to lack of advertising knowledge but I do have food on the table and could not imaging seeing my children starving because of the failure of my business (www.uptowntickets.com) I have however taken the money I used for extracaricular activities to Help in the effort to FEED THE CHILDREN. As of today I have now placed my third donation. My wish is that anyone reading this will give , even a little, to help our countries children , be fed. To all that do ... GOD BLESS YOUR HEARTS. Although your particular way of saying it may confuse at first, that statement actually reflects something that took me a lot of years and a lot of kicks in the head to learn - it's basically Buddhist I think. None of us are really very good at knowing what we want or need, although usually we think we know what we want. Often, when we don't get what we are certain at that moment we must have, weeks or months or years later we discover that actually it was a good thing we didn't get it. When you go down one path, there are of lot of others that you cannot go down - when one path is blocked, it actually means that a lot more have because of that come open to you. So being patient and letting it unfold, instead of trying to force things in a direction they don't seem to want to go, is often the best policy.
That doesn't mean give up wishing or hoping or planning - it just means accepting that you don't know the future (well okay, maybe Wen does) and therefore you can't really know what the best outcome or path is until you get there.

Although it is very personal and self-serving on the one hand, on the other my wish could help my clients as well as myself out tremendously if granted. Laugh if you will (and I am sure many of you will), but my wish is to meet a woman who would become the love of my life (and I of hers) and who at the same time is good with this whole SEO business I can't seem to grasp. She would be a benefit to myself as someone who loves me and whom I would love, and to our clients by helping in their search engine rankings. It isn't that I am dumb but I just can't seem to get a handle on really good search engine tactics! I'm caucasian, just turned 47, been divorced for about 8 years, am 5'8" and of average build for my age if anyone here might be interested. I spend way too much time at the office but am too shy to approach anyone in person and despite the Shakesperean quote in my sig I tend to avoid the risks of discouragement. I've had a web design and hosting business located in the Pacific Northwestern U.S.A. for the past four years.

The holidays can seem like an awful reminder of your loneliness without someone to share it with.
Yes - loneliness, loss, despair, discouragement... it is worth stopping and remembering that for people who are happy with life this can indeed be a time of joy and love and companionship but there are many people who don't and/or can't experience it that way.
In my profession, this is one of the busiest and most difficult times of the year for my clients (and in turn I guess for me). If you have an opportunity to participate in some activity or personal gesture that might make the holidays just a little bit less painful or a little bit more tolerable for someone in that position, I urge you to do it.
For those in this world who feel alone, abandoned, and forgotten, it doesn't take very much from us to make a huge difference.
it's very interesting to see how different people from various walks of life/the biz have posted to this thread.
it's actually very beautiful; there are over 8 php pages here which collectively portray a moment in the human condition that touches me emotionally.....
i have not posted until now because i simply have no wishes; i have had a very fortunate life as of late & i am humbly grateful for this.
but if i'm to have a wish, then my only wish is for the people out there in the world who need it most....the cold, the hungry, the lonely, the poor, the elderly, the sick & the dying, the scared........that they get at least one more chance....................if that's all that they can get.
i wish i could remember who said "the blaze of intelligence is of incalculably less value than the smallest spark of charity" becasue i would like to quote him/her here.....

I tried to do a Google on the quote, then the two manes I came up with. Best I can say is the quote comes from either William Nevins or William Devins.
And I echo your wishes for this holiday season. That's a beautiful wish! I think a few more prayers are in order in that direction. :)

I did the same lookup, Syren, and I concluded that it might be included in Rev William Nevins "Thoughts on Popery," 1836 -- however, who knows? It's definitely not a popular quotation as it wasn't in either of the main quotation sites.
Minstrel -- yeah, I've been one of the ppl who have fought depression, ranging from mild to severe, during most holiday seasons during the past 20 years or so. As I've grappled with the concept of false expectations, it's eased up some. As I've reached out to others, it's helped to heal my own feelings of being disappointed. As I've enlarged my worldview to include a lot of viewpoints that I didn't have at one time, I'm less filled with angst about the human condition.
I tend to subscribe to "one creates their own reality." And, while I can't always hold this in clear focus, I gently nudge myself back towards it when feeling down. Telling myself that "I'm omly feeling down because I'm doing it to myself" isn't particularly satisfying; however, if I just change my orientation a bit, and look for something that is good and valid, I naturally just feel better.
It's all out there -- good and bad. Neither disappears because one chooses to focus on one or the other. So, why not focus on what feels better? Most of us have history in love souring and leaving us feeling unloved or unwilling to love. The disappointment is compounded by the sheer volume of hype over "romantic" love or Christmas cheer.
Ignore the hyperbole. Do as you can, step by step. There is always someone who will accept small gestures of kindness and caring, even if it's only a smile and a friendly "Hello." It's easy to see their eyes light up as they are recognized as being "valid." In turn, I feel more cheery and the next smile and hello is easier to do.

I wish someone could tell me why some of my newletter graphics (especially the graphical links) keep getting stripped out of my November newsletter when I upload it to my website archives. How do I fix it?
Both the website and the newsletter are templates. I have tried to pick up a little HTML on my own recently, and I have used it for the graphical links. I have also used it to make text links go bold and red with a mouse rollover, but this also does not completely work in my archives.

This is probably because directories of the original newsletter and where you are archiving it to are different.
Your links to images and stylesheets (for your rollover effects) are being referenced in your newsletter pages based on the directory they are in. When you move that page to another directory, this reference point changes with it -- and now pointing at a directory that does not exist in the new path, or if it does exist the images are not there.
If you will post links to a current newsletter and an archived newsletter, I will be more than happy to take a look at it for you.
Oh my goodness....look what time it is !!!

This may sound really silly, but I think it is really fitting. For my Christmas wish I would like everyone whether to consider Christ's role in our lives as our Savior and the principles that He taught through the short time he was on the earth. For isn't Christmas literally the celebration of Christ?
And I would also say that because of our Lord, whether you accept Him or not, it is only through him that we can have the true peace that every child of God deserves, which is everyone of us and I bear witness of that love and I know many others will as well. May you all have the spirit of peace which is the spirit of Christ with you this day as well as all the days to follow and always remember Him. Amen and Merry Christmas.

P.S. I didn't link the email on purpose, in an attempt to avoid the spam bots. :D
Best of Luck,
Rocky

Although your particular way of saying it may confuse at first, that statement actually reflects something that took me a lot of years and a lot of kicks in the head to learn - it's basically Buddhist I think. None of us are really very good at knowing what we want or need, although usually we think we know what we want. Often, when we don't get what we are certain at that moment we must have, weeks or months or years later we discover that actually it was a good thing we didn't get it. When you go down one path, there are of lot of others that you cannot go down - when one path is blocked, it actually means that a lot more have because of that come open to you. So being patient and letting it unfold, instead of trying to force things in a direction they don't seem to want to go, is often the best policy
Uh, yes. Thanks for the compliment, I guess?
You people are all so deep and perspicatious around here so I often find that I don't quite 'get' what you are saying.
Like, maybe I accidentally said that stuff, minstrel, but I was actually talking about when you wake up and have to go to the bathroom real bad but can't, for some reason, until you relax.
You guys sure don't really listen, do you - hey

That's also called intuition, based on deep undercurrents of thought to try and make sense out of discrete facts that do not appear to belong in the same cluster. The final awareness, that flash of intuition, is a fast sort of all available data that's been linked and filed. Preliminary theories of "how" it all works together were begun sometime previously. Sometimes, we can only extrapolate, a longer and more deliberate conscious data sort. And, it frequently leaves out the apparent "unusual" fact because it doesn't quite fit.
Letting go lets intuition have a voice.

Yes, I agree -- the path analogy is my description term for each of our lives -- different paths to walk. I found it useful for me to not only stop looking back -- as path branches tend to obscure what has gone before, but also to realize that each nexus point is an apex of two or more differing paths.
Whichever path wasn't chosen, it rapidly veers off as being a viable alternative. It is forever unknowable to second guess oneself that "if only . . ." one had chosen the OTHER one. As the new path continues to offer choices and new branchings.
It is useless to wonder what might have been. Things are as they are -- the rest is merely daydreams and night meanderings. The future may be unknowable, but at least one can plan and work towards attaining a dreamed of goal. This isn't true with the past. It's been written. It's just part of the whole now.

No doubt! I'm impressed to see such insight, and it is amazing how fast people come down to earth when you explain the other, unthought of, possible negative outcomes that they failed to consider. They always seem to assume that what they didn't choose would've been better, not maybe worse.

I have received several answers to my wish for a logo for my website. I would like to thank everyone for taking the time and effort to fulfill my wish. My "partners" (family members) and I have narrowed it down to 3 that each of us have picked, but we like different ones. We were wondering if it would be possible to set up a poll here to help us solve this?

Tis true. And, they don't see the new choices and branchings that would have occurred on the alternate path. Because they are writing the script for an unknowable fantasy, it doesn't have to include "warts 'n all."
Don't get me wrong, there is more than one "smack my forehead, I wish I'd had a V-8" choice in my life. At least life and its choices plays with a bigger deck than 52.
Another thing that I espouse is that life is all about learning--that one doesn't learn from one's successes but from mistakes. It's the mistakes and correcting them that allows for the successes. That's why a success can sour so quickly into "is that ALL there is?"
My kids have found me to be an uncomfortable parent.

I was thinking about how Steven Glover has enriched our lives and shown his ability to provide a means for us to express goodwill and experience the joy of giving this Christmas.
I may not be expressing myself properly but be assured that this is not satire/humor/mikmik up to his old tricks.
I am genuinely touched by what you have given us in this forum with your " Christmas Giving = Instant Karma " thread.
http://www.webproworld.com/viewtopic.php?t=8675
Steven Glover wrote
I don't know, Steven, but it seems to me that our lives have been greatly enriched by this one simple post of yours, allowing us to grow spiritually by giving, allowing some of us to feel supported by a great group of people, and allowing me to become even more impressed and optimistic in regards to humanity's ability for good.
Most of all, we have gotten a sense of belonging to something special and beautiful taking place. This is a tough time of year for many, and I was myself going through a bad stretch of depression and feeling alone.
Through helping others, and laughing with them, as well as showing suport and compassion for a couple facing a 'scary beyong belief' health situation, I have been able to 'get outside of myself' and lonely feelings, turning them into a sense of accomplishment and belonging.
You reminded me of an important tool in life - the 'cure for what ails you' lies in oferring selflessly to others.
Having said that, I am hoping to start a thread in which we stay, oh, relatively on topic :o), and express thanks to Steven.
I also am keenly interested in his new project and want to concentrate on suggestions and direct help he wishes for , but first, some quotes from Steven Glover:
You guys need to stop being so altruistic! Ask for something someone can give you!!!. :)
Spoken like a true gentleman!
This i starting to do just what I was hoping it would.
We can all take credit for that!
Matauri and Steven are responsible for this:
Never mind I went ahead and made the Wish List for wishes that have not yet been filled. http://www.liquidfusion.ws/wishesrequested.cfm
Be sure if you post a wish in here you add it to that list and vice versa.
Also if you tak care of someones wish please PM or email me so I can remove it from the wish request list.and

http://www.liquidfusion.ws/wishes.cfm Go here to see wishes that have been granted!
Everyone is doing great so far lets keep it rolling!
Just 'cause christmas is over doesn't have to mean Christmas is over !
It's exciting that this is working!
Did someone say ale? I may need to hit the store.
A gentleman AND a scholar lol.
Come on guys there must be some more wishes we can grant?
Any wishes? Any?
and Matauri
Steven, I think because your kind heart started this...that you should be the first to make a wish :-)She has stolen my idea, yet again, this time to recognize Steven (I got the inspiration for this thread, from her, recognizing Steven like this!)Mat, special mention - I noticed you put lot's of help in too.
Here is the whole thread : http://www.webproworld.com/viewtopic.php?t=8675&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
And finally, but forever, from mistasix :
Again, thanks for enriching all our lives. SO! How's the website coming? You were looking for ideas regarding technology and urban myths?
I'd like to dedicate this to helping you, and also embarassing you!
Pray tell. What do you still need, for your site, or otherwise?
Merry Christmas everybody, - every day!

Mik, while you sing the praises of Stevens kind heart, you should truly add yourself to that list.
I sat back and watched the wishes being made and fulfilled; wishing the whole time I could help in some way. There were times I just wanted to say thank you, Steven, for sharing the Christmas spirit, but it didn't seem enough. Remaining on the sidelines probably wasn't the best answer either. But, when you have no wishes and find none you can help fulfill there is not much else you can do. In watching the thread it was great to see wishes come true, quickly and some what quietly. :)
So now Mik, with his wise words and unique turn of phrase, has hopefully taken the first step to help more wishes come true.
There is a very unique group of people within wpw and that group continues to grow by leaps and bounds. There is a spirit of friendship, caring, professionalism, and family here that shows continually.
Thank you Steven and Mik for proving that humanity still exists, even online. :)

Wow. I am not even sure how to respond to that other than a sincere and heartfelt Thank you!
I went into posting this thread with the hopes that some people would be helped by it, and as usual the membership at Web Pro World has shocked me once again, only this time in a good way. Just kidding. ;) All joking aside this thread would have never worked if each and every one of you hadn’t had such big hearts and an honest devotion to caring for one another. We are all truly blessed. We live in a time where we can cultivate these wonderful relationships over such great distances. With a few words strung together and a mouse click on the “submit” button we can ask a question and in many cases have a solution to many issues that we are struggling over whether it is a personal decision one has to make or a question on how to fix a perplexing Front Page extension problem. (In that case not so fast eh Minstrel?) There are times I take for granted how amazing our world is right now and find it easy to drudge thru the work week, but lately thanks to my online relationships (many made here) I have taken a step back and thought about how wonderful our world is becoming. It amazes me what a little group like ours can do when they put their minds to it. There are so many kind hearted people in just this little spot on the web. Thank you each and every one of you for being who you are, and for most of all caring!
To quote Ani DiFranco “I do it for the joy it brings because I'm a joyful girl because the world owes me nothing and we owe each other the world.”
Hmmmm. That about sums you guys up. Thank you all. Thank you Mik.

I echo Steven in thanking you for your kind words Mik. I also agree with Wen, you left yourself out of that post.
Steven & I discussed on another topic how good it would be to have something like this for Xmas, and Steven took the initiative & got the ball rolling. Congrats Steven on a good job self-Moderating it too. Many times I saw it go off topic and you pulled it back in line.
I've only ever experienced a rare breed of people like this once before online, and that was many years ago. As the net grew so did the personal side of it disappear. Now here we are with the net peaking & a whole mess of challenges to come in dealing with it, and here is another rare breed of people who are going out of their way to help each other.
So to everyone that asked for, delivered, or even watched this unfold from the sidelines... thank you for being part of it.
And to Brittany & the gang from WPW...thank you for providing the venue for it to happen in.
Here's hoping that EVERYONE will get something they wish for in 2004 !!! :-)

We're all part of a great team here whose whole is greater than the sum of it's parts.
Speaking of parts: Steven Glover quoted:
... I'm a joyful girl...
One of the advances of technology oft' predicted is of virtually painless, accepted, multiple gender switching procedures (which I'm sure my well read colleagues know) in the near future.
Something you want to tell us 'Steven' ? lol - Don't forget about the "embaress him" part!
But here is a suggestion for "Disciples of Tech", or WPW for that matter"
A COOKBOOK!
A collection of the disciples favourite computer 'tips' and gourmet 'treats' for propellerheads! - microwaves: great for quick meals and erasing those embarassing hard drive files. Editor: redcircle
- turkey treats with jello, and color tips for website. ed: wenwilder
You get the idea, but with real tips and download links
It could have little holographic pics of each member that changes when viewed at different angles. ed: Matauri!
And wen, you, of all people, should be proud of yourself for the way this forum works and what it is.
Your warmth, and insightful 'turns of phrases' are what first drew me to become part of. Wow, wen. Don't you forget it.

Ha, ha, ha... Minstrel, you're quite right.
It's an unfortunate condition I've had since birth. Only one in every 100 pics manages to disquise my deer-eyes and sadly I guess, this isn't one of them. However, I assure you, it's the least ET-ish of all that were snapped that evening ;-)

Nothing to apologize for Minstrel! I was quite seriously laughing along with you. I never took it as rude in the slightest.
What you took to be a funny contextual expression is really a funny perpetual "deer caught in the headlights" photo look.
You're far from the first person to make such a comment and I long ago stopped worrying about trying to look normal in photos. If it works for ET, it works for me :-)

Not sure if this was the first Wayne's World or the second but I remembered that being in the laundromat, where Garth is folding those tiny little jockey shorts he's just shrunk, and the following dialog ensues:
Foxy Lady: Would you like to have dinner some night?
Garth: I like to have dinner every night.
I also loved the story-telling ex-roadie who tells them stories about Ozzie and jellybeans and says, "I 'ad to beat 'im to deaf wiv 'is own shoe. But that's anuvver story altogever..."

Don't ya just love being the last post on a page? Almost as bad as being the first on the next page when trying to make references to all the 'above posts' lol
So what you do is pick "Post New Topic" at the top of the list of topics in a category, probably "Logo Review" would be best. (Yes, I know, Sherlock !)
Thin it is like replying to a post except the Subject Line that you add will show as the topic in the list under 'Site Design'.
Then put your wishes and or directions about your topic/poll (eg. please help us choose the best logo for our site) so we can judge accordingly.
Underneath is a form like this:
Add a Poll
If you do not want to add a poll to your topic, leave the fields blank.
Poll question [___________________]
Poll option [___________________] [ add option]
Run poll for [___] days. [ Enter 0 or leave blank for a never-ending poll ]
So you get proper results, For each poll otion put something like Logo 1, 2 or 3, or else something to help ID what counts towards what.
Seeing that you have three logos to choose from, you would enter 'logo X' and hit 'Add Option', then another blank field will appear for the next choice etc.
Then of course, hit submit!
You can always edit anything that you submit later, I think, with the 'edit' button above and right at each post you have made!

I wish to make a wish for the wish list. I wish that I had more traffic to my web site www.uwantstuffwegotstuff.us as I am starting a business doing affordable web design but because of my low budget at the moment my advertising is nil. I am slowly getting people but nothing noticable. Also if anyone has on their wish list a web site I can give them a really good discount. My focus is towards small business and individuals wanting to make their internet prescence at a reasonable price.
thanks.. Jeff a.k.a. harplayr@sonic.net
Hi everyone!
I'm a newbie here... but looks like I missed getting my wish on Santa's list this year.
I'm hoping to find a job next year in UK, where I will be relocating back to. In the past few years I have been expeirencing different cultures and lifestyles, and working in countries such as China, HK, US... and thought its about time I went home to my family and friends.
I've started off as a Multimedia Designer for web based applications, and progressed to project management, and now into online marketing, and affiliate marketing.
CVs, examples, and references available on request.
Therefore, if anyone out there happen to know where there is a company in need of an online expert, please send an email or PM (private message) to me! Much appreciated, thanks.

Lets see, X-Mas is passed but I will still post this wish list.
I wish for a trailer that can I can use to haul a go-cart around with and use for hauling other things when I work in the yard.
I wish for a small work shop building that I can store all of my yard equipment in plus still have some room to work on things in it. 9x13
I wish for a college fund that could be used later so that when it comes time to go the funds would be there.
I wish that my house payments were all done and I could put the money from that to the above.
I wish that my web site, www.yourweb.info, would take off and I could make a lot of money so that I could than buy the above.
It is nice to wish for things. If it does happen that would be great. If not life will still go on. If someone or some company does decide to make any wish come ture than that would be cool.
Well those are some of my wishes. Take them for what they are worth. Who ever else has a wish on here I hope your wish does come true.
May this year be a good one to all.

Well, I tried. I truly tried. But when ya don't hear from someone, there's not much you can do.
Fortunately, my offering has been requested by a couple of great posters...Minstrel, and Steven Glover himself....if I didn't hear from Page Writer.
I didn't. So, Minstrel, it is yours. since you were first :-) Please PM me your mailing address and I shall pop it in the mail.
Enjoy!
(Now if someone would just be interested in creating a wee integrated web form-database for me and the non-profit I work for :-)

LOL!! minstrel and Dreamweaver.. I never thought I'd see those two words in the same sentence!
Good luck Dave, I'm sure you won't regret it! :o)
Steven, how's the list of wishes (http://www.liquidfusion.ws/wishes.cfm) granted coming along? I guess with the holiday season now drawing to a close, we should all be seeking help in the appropriate forums.. where I'm sure our charitable members will only be too glad to assist! ;-)
In the meantime though, to ALL those who requested wishes... if someone has granted your wish... why not take the time out to fill in the form at the above link and add it to the list!
And I'd like to reiterate so many of our WPW members' comments and say what a great thread this has been, and thank Steven again for all his efforts in making this thing happen!

It might be better to hold the applause - I may be too old to learn it... besides, I have a feeling that even if I love it, I'm going to have to tinker with the pages from time to time in FrontPage, for old time's sake, just to mess up the code a bit... ;o)
