I want to change the colors of the ocean around a person without distorting the sharp boundaries of the person. What tools do I use to prevent the blurring and alterations of the person?

Masks are the best way to accomplish this. adjust your feathering and tolerance settings to mask off the individual. you can thehn invert the mask to the background and do whatever you want to that area, leaving the person as they are.

staceman is quite correct. What you want to do though is first duplicate the image and put that on the layer above the original. Then mask the person on the duplicate layer so the origianl shows through from the layer below. At that point you can manulipate the top layer without affecting the origianl image. Have fun-

You could draw a path around the person with the pen tool or lasso (depending on your photo, you may have to draw around the edge of the ocean also.) Make a selection with feather 0. The feather will control how sharp the boundary is. Feather 2 or 3 will soften the edges.

To change color it can be done several ways. Image/Adjustments/Curves or Image/Adjustments/Levels are a good ways. You could also add layers, adjustment layers or color overlays.
