Can't tell what this forum is all about. Also the logo needs to communicate, communicate, communicate. The colors are too close together making the text hard to read.

Logo -- masthead -- whatever you want to call it -- it's always going to be an identification issue. Much of one's first impression is formed by the impact of an entity's branding mark. If it's hard to distinguish the words from the background, very few will expend the necesssary effort to discern their meaning.
I don't buy into all of Bill's perpetual harangue about the importance of communicating, but as a condensed message, and at its core, he's right: this tells us nothing about what you're all about. Kinda looks like Matrix meets a StarTrek transporter and then there's a bunch of red smudge with the difficult to read "Xanther Forums" pressed way too close to the top of the graphic. Of course, to fairly assess its entire impact, we'd have to see it in context. I'm sorry if this sounds too negative. It probably looks a whole lot better when combined with the other graphic elements on your pages.

I would move the text across to the right or the people to the left so that they appear to be looking up at the words.
Also, try using a more neutral colour for the words. Cream, maybe white or a light grey?

I'm noticing a lot of the submissions in this forum aren't truly logos in the traditional sense, but rather identity graphics for websites.
Typically, logos are designed as the prime "brand" to identify an entity, commercial or otherwise.
I would suggest creating a basic logo for print, and then creating glossy derivatives of the logo for websites, multimedia presentations...etc. rather than setting out designing the logo to match a website interface, which seems to be a common (but in my opinion not very prudent practice).
