As I've found (and most others too), that the newest technologies in internet marketing seem to stem from pornography. Although many of it's actions aren't usually moral or legal, it's always been at the forefront. From the users out there, I was wondering what they've found in the way of their newest tactics (i.e. new forms of spam mail, pop-ups, ect...) that might lead the way to new forms of internet marketing? And, most importantly, if you've found ways that are moral and could enhance internet marketing in general.

So, any ideas?

It is funny how they always seem to work harder on there marketing.

They also take chances I would be scared to take.

One of the slightly different marketing strategies in the porn market is the way they develop link relationships with other sites. While developing link partnerships is a common practice throughout the internet, the porn market takes this to a new height. Where most web sites use a static set of links for link exchange programs, the porn market typically uses “Top Referrer” lists. These lists are dynamically generated through scripts that measure the amount of traffic they are receiving from other sites and then display links to those sites in a ranked list. These lists range in size from 10 to 100 links. Larger lists usually have the top ten referrers displayed somewhere on the front page, with the complete list being visible on a separate page dedicated to that purpose.
With hordes of site owners sitting up late into the night thinking of ways to send fake referrers, the rampant fraud in the industry lead to the development of increasingly sophisticated fraud detection scripts. Today these link exchange scripts have become a business in their own right.
Exactly how, when, or if this technology will work its way into the legitimate side of the internet I wouldn’t venture to say. Having evolved out of the same static link exchange programs most of us are using, it seems very likely that this will somehow enter the common market in one way or another.
If anyone knows of non-adult site using a similar program I would love a chance to take a look at it.

Whit,

I might have what you're looking for. Take a look at http://www.eyemagination.us/links.cfm. I belong to the link list system. Although the porn industry finds the top referring sites thorough scripts, the link list is a type of legitimate referral system. Basically, you sumbit your site for review. If it's been approved (based on numerous factors...and all done by humans), you are added to the list. This makes for high-quality linking without trying to hunt down links on at a time.

I guess when it comes to legitimacy, porn will always break new ground...it's just amazing to see what readjusts the systems for moral and legal uses.

As for my view on the porn industry, I believe they like to shift to new mediums. When VCR's started to get into the mix, they were into the laserdisc movement...then onto computers...now onto DVDs. But they still play a big role in all the mediums...and they've gotten really good at them. Now, I see them moving onto cell phones. What better way to view the person you are speaking with. And now, sprint just introduced video streaming...so I'm sure pornography will give that new technology a boost.

P.S. Is "pornography" a bad word? I'm wondering why one of the moderators took it off the title of this subject. Care to comment?

Actually, I sent you a private message about that I believe on Friday, Brian - perhaps you haven't set your profile to notify you when you receive private messages?

It's not that it's a bad word but I was being cautious about having it displayed in large letters as a topic heading because we already have a problem with spam in the forums and I didn't want to run the risk of having pornography vendors enter the mix because they found WebProWorld in a keyword search. As I said in the private message, I also have no problem at all with your post or with this thread - just being cautious.

My children have told me repeatedly that I'm a worry-wart when it comes to issues of potential risk or danger - my response is usually that it's that trait that has kept me out of hospital and out of litigation all these years :-)
